Garmin Varia™ Vue Headlight Camera
Garmin's first cycling headlight with an integrated 4K camera — 600-lumen smart headlight, cutoff beam to reduce oncoming glare, auto brightness control, incident detection with auto-save, up to 7 hours battery (day flash + 1080p recording), Garmin Vault cloud storage, Wi-Fi uploads, Edge integration, built-in microphone, IPX7, and USB charging. Pairs with RCT715 for 360° coverage. MicroSD required (not included). $549.99.
Our Take: The Varia Vue is Garmin's answer to the Cycliq Fly12 — a front headlight with an integrated dashcam so you can ride with a light and a camera without bolting two separate devices to your bars. At $549.99, it's not cheap, but the value proposition is ecosystem integration: pair it with a Garmin Edge computer and the light auto-adjusts brightness based on speed and ambient conditions, the camera starts and stops with your ride, and if you also run a Varia RCT715 rear camera, both cameras sync for front+rear footage controlled from one screen. That's something no Cycliq setup can do. The 600-lumen headlight is legitimate — five modes from 140 lumens (low) to 600 lumens (day flash), with a cutoff beam that prevents blinding oncoming traffic. The smart brightness feature works: it dims when you slow down and brightens when you speed up or enter darker areas, all automatically via the paired Edge. The 4K camera records at 30fps and looks good in daylight, though reviewers note it's not GoPro-quality — dynamic range is limited, night footage is mediocre, and image stabilization requires dropping to 2688×2160. What the camera excels at is the dashcam use case: continuous loop recording with automatic incident detection that locks and saves footage before, during, and after a detected event. You don't have to think about it. For insurance claims and close-pass evidence, that's exactly what you want. Battery life is the main constraint: 1.25 hours at high beam + 4K, up to 7 hours at day flash + 1080p, or 9 hours camera-only with no light. For longer rides, the Vue supports charging while in use via USB, so a power bank in your jersey pocket extends runtime indefinitely. One note: no microSD card is included — you need to buy one separately (8 GB minimum, up to 512 GB, Class 10 or faster). The camera cannot record without it.
Why you'd choose this headlight camera
- Records continuously in 4K/30fps, 1440p/30fps, 1080p/30fps, or 1080p/60fps. Loop records over old footage when the card fills up. Incident detection uses the built-in accelerometer to automatically lock and save footage before, during, and after a detected event — even if you can't press a button. Built-in microphone captures audio. Requires a separately purchased microSD card (up to 512 GB).
- Five light modes: High (550 lm), Medium (300 lm), Low (140 lm), Night Flash (400 lm), and Day Flash (600 lm). When paired with a compatible Garmin Edge, the light auto-adjusts brightness based on your speed and ambient light conditions — brighter when you speed up or enter dark areas, dimmer when you slow or stop. Visible from up to 1.6 km (1 mile).
- The beam pattern has a sharp cutoff line that reduces light intensity above the horizontal plane. This prevents blinding oncoming drivers, pedestrians, and other cyclists while still lighting your path ahead. Similar to automotive low-beam design — courteous and effective.
- The built-in accelerometer detects sudden decelerations or impacts and automatically locks the footage — saving video from before, during, and after the event. Locked footage won't be overwritten by loop recording and can be automatically uploaded to Garmin Vault via Wi-Fi. Critical for insurance claims and police reports.
- Battery ranges from 1.25 hours (high beam + 4K) to 9 hours (camera only, no light, 1080p). The practical sweet spot is 7 hours in day flash mode with 1080p recording — enough for most road rides. The Vue also supports charging while in use via USB, so a power bank extends runtime for ultra-distance rides.
- When connected to a saved Wi-Fi network, the Varia Vue automatically uploads locked (incident) footage to Garmin Vault for secure cloud storage. No cables needed — just ride home and the footage backs up. Free trial included for new users; subscription required after. The Varia app lets you review, edit, and add data overlays (speed, GPS, ride metrics) to footage.
- When both the Varia Vue (front) and Varia RCT715 (rear) are paired to a Garmin Edge computer, you get synchronized front and rear video recording controlled from one screen. Both cameras can be started, stopped, and configured from the Edge — and incident detection works on both simultaneously. True 360° ride documentation.
- Pairs via ANT+ and Bluetooth LE with compatible Garmin Edge cycling computers (540, 840, 1040, 1050, etc.) for full control. The Edge controls camera recording, light modes, and brightness — and auto-adjusts the light based on its ambient light sensor and your speed. Also pairs with select Garmin smartwatches and the Varia smartphone app.

Who this headlight camera is perfect for
- Road and commuter cyclists who want dashcam evidence of traffic interactions, close passes, and incidents — without mounting a separate camera.
- Cyclists already in the Garmin ecosystem (Edge computer, Varia rear radar/camera) who want seamless front+rear recording and smart light control from one screen.
- Safety-focused riders who want incident detection to automatically capture and save footage they may not be able to record manually after a crash.
- Night riders who need a quality 600-lumen headlight with a cutoff beam that doesn't blind other road users.
- Long-distance riders who need extended battery life — 7 hours in day flash + 1080p, or indefinite with USB charging while riding.
You may prefer a different option if…
- You want rear-facing radar + camera → Varia RCT715 at $399.99 — combines rearview radar, tail light, and 1080p camera in a rear-facing unit.
- You want rear radar without a camera → Varia RearVue 820 at $299.99 — Garmin's most advanced rear radar with 175m detection, brake light, and 24-hour battery.
- You want action-camera quality video (GoPro-level) → a dedicated action camera like the GoPro Hero will deliver better dynamic range, stabilization, and low-light performance. The Vue's camera is designed as a dashcam, not an action cam.
- You want a headlight only without a camera → dedicated cycling headlights from Garmin (Varia UT800) or others offer brighter output at lower price points.
- You're on a budget → the Cycliq Fly12 Sport ($319) is a competing headlight camera with similar concept at a lower price, though it lacks Wi-Fi, Garmin integration, and has shorter battery life.

Varia Vue — Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Varia Vue different from the RCT715?
The Varia Vue ($549.99) is a front-facing headlight camera. The RCT715 ($399.99) is a rear-facing radar camera tail light. They serve different positions on the bike and are designed to work together. The Vue has a 600-lumen headlight, 4K camera, cutoff beam, auto brightness, Wi-Fi, and up to 7 hours battery. The RCT715 has built-in rearview radar (140m detection), a tail light, and a 1080p camera, with shorter battery life. When both are paired to a Garmin Edge, you get synchronized front+rear recording controlled from one screen.
Does the Varia Vue include a memory card?
No. You need to purchase a microSD card separately — minimum 8 GB, Class 10 or faster, up to 512 GB supported. Without a card, the camera cannot record video (the headlight still works). A 128 GB or 256 GB card is a good balance of recording time and cost.
Does the Varia Vue have radar?
No. The Varia Vue is a headlight and camera only — no rearview radar. For radar detection, pair it with a Varia rear unit: the RearVue 820 ($299.99), RTL515 ($199.99), RVR315 ($149.99), or RCT715 ($399.99).
How good is the camera quality?
The camera is designed as a cycling dashcam, not an action camera. In daylight, footage is clear and useful for documenting traffic interactions, license plates, and road conditions. In low light and at night, dynamic range is limited — oncoming headlights can wash out details, and number plates become harder to read. Image stabilization is available but reduces resolution from 4K to 2688×2160. If you need GoPro-level video quality for ride content creation, a dedicated action camera will be better. For the dashcam/evidence use case, the Vue performs well.
What is Garmin Vault?
Garmin Vault is a cloud storage subscription that automatically uploads locked (incident-detected) footage from the Varia Vue via Wi-Fi when you're in range of a saved network. You don't need to remove the memory card or connect cables — ride home, and the footage backs up. A free trial is included for new users; a paid subscription is required after the trial. You can also manually download footage via the Varia app without a Vault subscription.
Can I use it while charging?
Yes. The Varia Vue supports use while charging via USB, so you can extend battery life indefinitely with a power bank. At 4K resolution with high beam, the unit draws approximately 10 watts. For most riders, a 10,000 mAh battery bank in a jersey pocket or frame bag adds several hours of runtime.
What's the best camera mode for everyday riding?
For most riders, 1080p/30fps in day flash mode gives the best balance: 7 hours of battery, good image quality for evidence purposes, and the brightest light mode (600 lumens). If you want maximum video detail and have shorter rides, 4K/30fps in day flash gives 5 hours. For the absolute longest runtime (commuters, ultra-distance), 1080p camera-only (no light) gives 9 hours.
What devices is the Varia Vue compatible with?
The Vue connects via ANT+, Bluetooth LE, and Wi-Fi. It pairs with compatible Garmin Edge cycling computers (Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050, and others), select Garmin smartwatches (fēnix, Forerunner, Enduro, etc.), and the Varia smartphone app on iOS and Android. Edge computers provide the best experience — auto brightness, camera controls, and synced front+rear recording. The Varia app provides camera/light control and video editing for riders without an Edge.
What's in the box?
Varia Vue cycling camera with headlight, flush out-front mount, mounting kit, charging/data cable, tether, and documentation. No microSD card is included — you need to buy one separately (Class 10+, 8 GB minimum, up to 512 GB).
