Garmin Varia™ RearVue 820 Radar Tail Light
Garmin’s most powerful cycling radar and tail light — 175m vehicle detection, 100-lumen visibility from 2 km, brake light alerts, vehicle size and threat level tracking, 24-hour day flash battery, and USB-C. $299.99.
Our Take: The Varia RearVue 820 is the most significant upgrade Garmin has ever made to their cycling radar, and the RTL515 was already the gold standard. Every specification has been improved: the radar sees farther (175m vs 140m), wider (60° vs 45°), and smarter (vehicle size classification, threat levels, same-speed tracking). The tail light is brighter (100 lumens day flash) and adds an automatic brake light — something no previous Varia had. Battery life jumps from 16 to 24 hours in day flash, and the long-overdue switch to USB-C means you can finally stop carrying that micro-USB cable. At $299.99, it’s $100 more than the RTL515 at $199.99, but the improvements justify the premium for anyone who rides regularly on roads. For riders who want camera recording, the RCT715 at $399.99 adds a 1080p camera but uses older-generation radar with shorter range and battery life. For budget-conscious riders who just need radar detection without a tail light, the RVR315 at $149.99 remains available.
Why you’d choose this radar
- The RearVue 820 detects approaching vehicles from over 175 meters (190+ yards) away — 35 meters farther than the RTL515’s 140m range. A wider 60-degree field of view (vs 45 degrees on RTL515) means it picks up vehicles across multiple lanes, not just directly behind.
- A first for Varia: the RearVue 820 classifies approaching vehicles as small, medium, or large, tracks their lane position side-to-side, and assesses threat level based on speed and trajectory. See exactly what’s behind you on a compatible Edge computer or the Varia app.
- The brightest Varia tail light yet: 100 lumens in day flash mode (vs 65 on RTL515) makes you visible from up to 2 km (1.24 miles) away. Four light modes plus custom pattern creation via the Varia app.
- The RearVue 820 detects when you’re slowing or stopping and triggers a distinctive flash pattern to alert drivers behind you. A first for the Varia lineup — no other model has this feature.
- Up to 24 hours in day flash mode, 30 hours radar-only, 15 hours peloton, and 10 hours solid. That’s 50% longer than the RTL515 in day flash mode, enough for multi-day touring or ultra-endurance rides.
- The RearVue 820 can detect and track vehicles traveling at the same speed behind you — including vehicles waiting to pass and even other cyclists in a group. Previous Varia models could only detect vehicles approaching at different speeds.
- The RearVue 820 moves to USB-C, replacing the micro-USB on the RTL515. No more carrying a dedicated cable just for your radar. Also features a user-replaceable battery design for long-term serviceability.
- Create your own flash patterns in the Varia smartphone app, choosing brightness levels and flash durations. Adjust light intensity and behavior to match your riding conditions and preferences. The RTL515 only offers preset patterns.

Varia RearVue 820 — Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the RearVue 820 better than the RTL515?
The RearVue 820 is a generational leap over the RTL515 in nearly every specification. The radar detects vehicles from 175 meters away (vs 140m on the RTL515) with a wider 60-degree field of view (vs 45 degrees). Battery life jumps to 24 hours in day flash mode (vs 16 hours). The tail light is brighter at 100 lumens day flash (vs 65 lumens) and visible from 2 km (vs 1.6 km). The 820 adds features the RTL515 doesn’t have at all: brake light detection, vehicle size classification (small/medium/large), threat level assessment, same-speed tracking, custom light patterns via the Varia app, radar-only mode, and USB-C charging. If you’re upgrading from the RTL515, the improvements are significant across the board.
Does the RearVue 820 have a camera?
No. The RearVue 820 is a radar and tail light only — it does not include a camera. If you want continuous ride recording with incident detection, the Varia RCT715 ($399.99) combines radar, tail light, and a 1080p camera in one unit. The trade-off is that the RCT715 uses older-generation radar (140m range, 45-degree field of view, no vehicle size detection or brake light) and has significantly shorter battery life (6 hours max vs 24 hours on the 820).
What devices is the RearVue 820 compatible with?
The RearVue 820 pairs via Bluetooth LE and ANT+ with compatible Garmin Edge cycling computers (Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050, and others), select Garmin smartwatches (fēnix, Forerunner, Enduro, etc.), and the Varia smartphone app on iOS and Android. It also works with third-party apps like Ride with GPS, Hammerhead Karoo computers, and Wahoo Elemnt computers via ANT+. Advanced vehicle tracking features (size, threat level, lane position) require the latest compatible Edge computers or the Varia app.
What is the brake light feature?
The RearVue 820 detects when you’re slowing down or stopping using its built-in accelerometer, and automatically triggers a distinctive flashing pattern that alerts drivers and other cyclists behind you. This works in any light mode. It’s similar to a car’s brake light but for cycling — a first for the Varia lineup. The RTL515, RVR315, and RCT715 do not have this feature.
How does vehicle size and threat level detection work?
When paired with a compatible Edge cycling computer or the Varia app, the RearVue 820 classifies approaching vehicles as small, medium, or large. It also tracks their side-to-side lane position and assesses threat level based on speed and path of travel. This means you can see not just that a vehicle is approaching, but whether it’s a car or a truck, whether it’s changing lanes toward you, and how urgently you need to react. This is a RearVue 820 exclusive — no other Varia model offers this.
Can I use the RearVue 820 without a tail light (radar only)?
Yes. The RearVue 820 introduces a dedicated radar-only mode with no light output, lasting up to 30 hours on a single charge. This is useful if you already have a preferred tail light and want to add radar detection without replacing it, or for daytime rides where you don’t need the tail light. The RTL515 does not have a dedicated radar-only mode.
What’s in the box?
Varia RearVue 820 radar tail light, new seatpost mounting kit (fits most round, aero, and D-shaped seatposts), USB-C charging cable, and documentation. The Varia seat rail mount kit is sold separately for bikes where seatpost mounting isn’t possible.
