Garmin Edge® 850 GPS Cycling Computer
Compact GPS cycling computer with vivid 2.7-inch transmissive LCD (1,000 nits), touchscreen + buttons, built-in speaker with bike bell and voice prompts, Garmin Pay, Smart Fueling, Cycling Coach, preloaded maps with Trailforks, 5Hz GPS, up to 36 hours in battery saver mode. $599.99.
Our Take: The Edge 850 is essentially the Edge 1050 in a smaller body. It borrows nearly every premium feature from Garmin’s flagship — the brilliant transmissive LCD, speaker with bike bell and voice prompts, Garmin Pay, fast processor, on-device course creator, weather radar, GroupRide — and packages them into the compact Edge form factor with both touchscreen and physical buttons. That combination of touch + buttons is arguably the Edge 850’s strongest advantage over the 1050, which is touchscreen-only. When it’s pouring rain or you’re wearing winter gloves, physical buttons are invaluable. The screen is stunning. The 2.7-inch transmissive LCD at 1,000 nits with 420×600 resolution makes the Edge 840’s transflective display look dated. Maps are crisp, data fields are vivid, and readability in direct sunlight is excellent. The trade-off is real: 12 hours of battery in demanding use vs. 26 hours on the 840. If you ride 8–10 hours per week across multiple rides, you’ll be charging more often. For most recreational and competitive riders, that’s manageable. For ultra-endurance riders or multi-day tours, it’s a dealbreaker — look at the 840 or 840 Solar instead. The Edge 550 at $499.99 shares the same screen and core features but drops the touchscreen, speaker, and Garmin Pay. The Edge 1050 at $699.99 gives you a bigger screen and longer battery but loses the buttons. The Edge 850 at $599.99 sits right in the sweet spot.
Why you’d choose this cycling computer
- The Edge 850 uses the same transmissive LCD as the flagship Edge 1050 — 1,000 nits at 420×600 resolution in a 2.7-inch form. Colors are vivid, maps are detailed, and the screen is readable in direct sunlight. A dramatic upgrade over the Edge 840’s transflective display.
- Unlike the Edge 1050 (touchscreen only) or Edge 550 (buttons only), the Edge 850 gives you both. Pan, zoom, and swipe the map with touch. Use physical buttons when it’s raining, when you’re wearing thick gloves, or when a quick button press is faster. Seven buttons cover all functions.
- An actual speaker (not just a beeper) delivers a realistic digital bike bell, voice turn-by-turn navigation prompts, workout cues, and audible alerts for approaching vehicles when paired with Varia radar. Previously exclusive to the Edge 1050.
- Tap your Edge 850 at compatible payment terminals for mid-ride coffee, snacks, or emergency supplies. No wallet, no phone required. Supported by most major banks and payment networks.
- Get custom hydration and nutrition reminders based on your fitness level, power output, temperature, and humidity during rides. Free Garmin Cycling Coach plans adapt to your training, recovery, and specific course demands for upcoming events.
- Full topographic and cycling maps come preloaded for your region, including Trailforks trail maps with Forksight mode. Create and edit routes point-by-point directly on the device via touchscreen — no phone or computer needed.
- Multi-band GNSS with automatic 5Hz recording (5 samples per second) during descents for pin-point accuracy on trails. Enduro and downhill ride profiles, timing gates for segment splits, and post-ride trail breakdowns. Built for road, gravel, and mountain.
- Real-time GroupRide data comparisons (your stats vs. group averages). Live weather radar overlays showing wind direction and rain. Incident detection, LiveTrack, road hazard alerts from fellow Garmin riders, and Varia radar/camera compatibility.

Edge 850 — Frequently Asked Questions
What’s new on the Edge 850 compared to the Edge 840?
The Edge 850 replaces the 840 with several upgrades. The display is now a 2.7-inch transmissive LCD at 420×600 resolution (vs. the 840’s 2.6-inch transflective TFT at 246×322) — dramatically brighter and sharper. It adds a built-in speaker for voice turn-by-turn prompts and a digital bike bell. It adds Garmin Pay contactless payments. It adds on-device course creation via touchscreen. The processor is faster (same as Edge 1050), storage doubles to 64GB, and it includes new features like Smart Fueling alerts, Garmin Cycling Coach, GroupRide data comparisons, weather radar overlays, 5Hz GPS recording for MTB, and gear ratio analysis. The trade-off: battery life drops from 26 hours to about 12 hours in demanding use, weight increases from 85g to 112g, and there’s no solar option.
How does the Edge 850 compare to the Edge 550?
They’re very similar devices internally — same 2.7-inch transmissive LCD, same case size, same battery life. The Edge 850 adds a touchscreen (the 550 is buttons-only), a built-in speaker with bike bell and voice prompts, Garmin Pay, on-device course creation, and doubles storage to 64GB. The 550 at $499.99 is $100 less. If you don’t need the touchscreen, speaker, or Garmin Pay, the 550 provides the same core cycling features and display quality for less.
How does the Edge 850 compare to the Edge 1050?
The Edge 1050 ($699.99) is Garmin’s flagship. It has a larger 3.5-inch display (480×800), longer 20-hour battery in demanding use, and is touchscreen-only (no physical buttons). The Edge 850 has a 2.7-inch display, 12-hour battery, but includes both touchscreen and buttons. Both have the same speaker, Garmin Pay, fast processor, 64GB storage, and nearly identical software features. The 1050 costs $100 more for the bigger screen and better battery. The 850 is more compact (112g vs 161g) and offers button control in wet/cold conditions where touchscreens struggle.
Is the battery life really only 12 hours?
Garmin rates the Edge 850 at up to 12 hours in demanding conditions (active navigation, paired sensors, bright display). In battery saver mode, it extends to up to 36 hours. The new transmissive LCD is much brighter than the Edge 840’s transflective screen but consumes significantly more power. Reducing screen brightness to 30% can improve real-world battery life. If battery life is critical for ultra-endurance rides, consider the Edge 840 (26 hours) or Edge 840 Solar (up to 42 hours).
Does the Edge 850 have a solar option?
No. Unlike the Edge 840 (which offered a Solar model), the Edge 850 does not have a solar charging variant. The transmissive LCD technology that makes the screen brighter is not compatible with Garmin’s PowerGlass solar layer. If solar charging is important, the Edge 840 Solar remains available.
What sensors and accessories are compatible?
The Edge 850 connects via ANT+ and Bluetooth LE to heart rate monitors, power meters, speed/cadence sensors, Shimano Di2 and SRAM eTap electronic shifting, smart trainers, Garmin Varia radar and camera systems, Garmin Rally power meter pedals, and more. It’s compatible with the Garmin Connect and Garmin Connect IQ ecosystem. Wi-Fi is built in for syncing rides and downloading firmware updates.
What’s in the box?
Edge 850 GPS cycling computer, out-front bike mount, standard mount with rubber bands, tether, USB-C charging/data cable, and documentation. Heart rate monitors, speed/cadence sensors, and power meters are sold separately. Bundle options with sensors may be available.
