Garmin Forerunner® 265 & 265S GPS Running Smartwatch
The Forerunner 265 is Garmin's previous-generation intermediate GPS running watch — and still one of the best values in the lineup. It features a vivid AMOLED display, multi-band GPS with SatIQ™, Training Readiness, Training Status, Training Load, PacePro™, and full triathlon support. The 265 comes in a 46mm size; the 265S is the smaller 42mm sibling — same feature set, slightly longer battery life on account of the lower-power display. Both remain widely available new at reduced prices, making them excellent choices for runners who want serious training analytics without paying current-gen prices.
Our Take: The Forerunner 265 is the predecessor to the FR570 — and it remains an outstanding running watch. You get the full Training Readiness, Training Status, and Training Load suite, multi-band GPS with SatIQ, PacePro grade-adjusted pacing, the Race Widget, full triathlon support, and 8 GB of music storage. The 265S (42mm) actually outlasts the 265 (46mm) on battery in both smartwatch and GPS modes, making it a strong option for smaller wrists. The main trade-offs vs. the FR570 are the Gen 4 HR sensor (vs. Gen 5), no built-in speaker or microphone, no skin temperature tracking, no Evening Report, and no Garmin Triathlon Coach. For runners who primarily want a great training tool at a lower price, the FR265 delivers most of what the FR570 offers.
- Excellent value — full training analytics at a lower price The FR265 is often available at a significant discount compared to the FR570 and FR965, yet delivers the full Training Readiness, Training Status, and Load suite that sets Garmin apart from other brands.
- Multi-band GPS with SatIQ™ for accurate tracking The FR265 uses L1 + L5 GPS frequencies for excellent accuracy in cities, tree cover, and canyons. SatIQ automatically switches modes to optimize battery life without sacrificing accuracy when you need it most.
- Two sizes: 265 (46mm) and 265S (42mm) Both sizes share identical features. The 265S (42mm) actually has longer battery life — up to 15 days smartwatch and 24 hours GPS — thanks to its smaller, lower-power display. Great for narrower wrists.
- Training Readiness + Training Status + Load A complete training analytics system: Readiness tells you how prepared you are to train hard; Status shows whether you're Productive, Maintaining, or Overreaching; Load tracks weekly stress. The FR165 doesn't have Training Status or Load.
- PacePro™ grade-adjusted pacing strategy Build a race-day pacing plan that slows you uphill and pushes you downhill to even out total effort. Load a course from Garmin Connect and the watch guides you segment by segment. Not available on the FR165.
- Race Widget with course, weather & target pace Enter your upcoming race into Garmin Connect and the Race Widget appears on your watch — showing a pre-race countdown, weather forecast, course overview, and daily suggested workouts that adapt to the race and course.
- 8 GB music + Spotify / Amazon Music / Deezer Store playlists on the watch for phone-free listening via Bluetooth headphones. All FR265 variants include music storage — unlike the FR165 which requires the Music edition add-on.
- Full triathlon and multisport support Built-in triathlon and duathlon mode with auto sport transitions, open-water swimming with GPS and stroke detection, cycling with power meter support, and 30+ activity profiles. Not available on the FR165.
Who this watch is perfect for
- Runners who want the full Garmin training analytics suite — Readiness, Status, Load, PacePro, Race Widget — at a price below the current-gen FR570.
- Triathletes and multisport athletes who want auto transitions, open-water swim GPS, cycling power, and 30+ activity profiles without flagship pricing.
- Anyone who wants a smaller 42mm watch with excellent battery life — the FR265S outlasts the 46mm FR265 in both smartwatch and GPS modes.
- Runners upgrading from the FR165, FR255, or older Forerunners who want Training Readiness, Training Status, and PacePro for the first time.
- Budget-conscious athletes who still want multi-band GPS and the AMOLED display — features unavailable on the FR165 base model.
You may prefer a different Garmin if…
- You want the most accurate wrist HR sensor available — the FR570 and FR970 use the newer Elevate Gen 5; the FR265 uses Gen 4.
- You want to take Bluetooth phone calls from your wrist — only the FR570 and FR970 have a built-in speaker and microphone.
- You want skin temperature tracking, Evening Report, Garmin Triathlon Coach, Acute Load, or Real-Time Stamina — these are FR570/FR970-exclusive features.
- You need full color topographic maps and turn-by-turn navigation — step up to the FR965 or FR970.
- You want the longest possible battery life — the FR965 leads at 23 days vs. 13–15 days on the FR265 series.
