Garmin Forerunner® 970 Premium GPS Running & Triathlon Smartwatch
The Forerunner 970 is Garmin's flagship GPS running and triathlon smartwatch, released May 2025. It's the most capable Forerunner ever made — the only model with ECG, a built-in LED flashlight, sapphire crystal lens, and 10ATM water rating. Combined with the Elevate Gen 5 HR sensor, speaker and microphone for voice calls, skin temperature tracking, Triathlon Coach, preloaded topographic maps, titanium bezel, and a 1.4-inch AMOLED display, the FR970 leaves nothing on the table for athletes who want every feature Garmin offers in the Forerunner lineup.
Our Take: The FR970 is the everything watch. It's the only Forerunner with ECG, the only one with a flashlight, and one of only two with a speaker and microphone. Combined with maps, sapphire crystal, titanium bezel, Gen 5 sensor, skin temperature, and Triathlon Coach, it leaves nothing on the table. At $749.99 it's a significant investment, but for athletes who want every feature in a single watch there is no substitute. The main tradeoff is battery: the FR965 lasts 23 days vs the FR970's 15 days, so if battery matters more than features, the FR965 at $599.99 is the smarter pick.
Why you'd choose this model
- On-wrist ECG app to check for atrial fibrillation. Uses metal contacts on the caseback paired with the Gen 5 sensor. No other Forerunner has this capability.
- Garmin's newest optical heart rate sensor with improved accuracy. Also enables skin temperature tracking and ECG. Shared with FR570; all other Forerunners use Gen 3 or Gen 4.
- Take and make phone calls directly from the watch via Bluetooth. Also supports voice assistant. Only the FR570 and FR970 have this in the Forerunner lineup.
- Multi-mode LED flashlight with white and red modes. Essential for early morning runs, late-night visibility, and safety. Exclusive to the FR970 in the Forerunner lineup.
- Sapphire crystal is the most scratch-resistant lens material Garmin offers. A meaningful upgrade from Gorilla Glass DX (FR965) and Gorilla Glass 3 (FR265/570).
- Full-color topographic maps with turn-by-turn navigation, ClimbPro, and Up Ahead. 10ATM water rating (100m) — double the 5ATM on every other Forerunner.
- Garmin Triathlon Coach provides personalized swim/bike/run training plans that adapt based on performance and recovery. Only available on FR570 and FR970.
- Overnight wrist skin temperature readings to track trends in recovery and health. Requires the Gen 5 sensor — only available on FR570 and FR970 in the Forerunner lineup.

- Battery life is your top priority — the Forerunner 965 ($599.99) gets 23 days vs 15 days and saves $150.
- You want Gen 5 sensor + voice calls without maps — the Forerunner 570 ($549.99) saves $200.
- You don't need maps, ECG, or flashlight — the Forerunner 265 ($449.99) delivers the full training suite at $300 less.
- You want a smaller watch — the FR970 is 47mm only. The FR570 offers a 42mm option with Gen 5 sensor and voice calls.

Forerunner® 970 — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Forerunner 965 and the Forerunner 970?
The FR970 ($749.99) upgrades the FR965 with the Elevate Gen 5 HR sensor (vs Gen 4), ECG, built-in speaker and microphone for voice calls, LED flashlight, sapphire crystal lens (vs Gorilla Glass DX), skin temperature tracking, 10ATM water rating (vs 5ATM), and Triathlon Coach adaptive plans. The FR965 ($599.99) saves $150 and offers significantly longer battery life — 23 vs 15 days smartwatch, 31 vs 26 hours GPS. Choose the 970 for ECG, flashlight, and the latest sensor; choose the 965 for best-in-class battery and great value.
What is the difference between the Forerunner 965 and the Forerunner 570?
The FR965 ($599.99) has built-in topographic maps, titanium bezel, Gorilla Glass DX, 32GB storage, and 23-day battery. The FR570 ($549.99) has the newer Gen 5 HR sensor, speaker/mic for voice calls, Triathlon Coach plans, aluminum bezel, and a 42mm size option — but no maps and shorter battery (11–14 days). Choose the 965 for maps and battery; the 570 for the latest sensor and voice calling at $50 less.
Does the Forerunner 965 have maps?
Yes. The FR965 includes full-color, preloaded topographic maps with turn-by-turn navigation, ClimbPro for real-time climb data, and Up Ahead for aid stations and POIs. This is one of its key advantages over the FR265 and FR570, which do not have on-watch maps.
Does the Forerunner 965 have an ECG?
No. The FR965 uses the Elevate Gen 4 HR sensor which does not support ECG. For ECG in the Forerunner lineup, step up to the Forerunner 970 ($749.99) — the only Forerunner with ECG capability.
How long does the battery last on the Forerunner 965?
Up to 23 days in smartwatch mode, 31 hours in GPS mode, 10.5 hours with GPS and music, and up to 8 days with always-on display. This is the best battery life in the entire Forerunner lineup — no other AMOLED Forerunner comes close.
Is the Forerunner 965 good for triathlons?
Yes. The FR965 includes triathlon mode with auto sport-change between swim, bike, and run, plus duathlon, brick workout, and swimrun profiles. With built-in maps for bike and run legs, 31 hours of GPS battery, and 30+ sport profiles, it's an excellent multisport watch. It does not include Garmin Triathlon Coach — for that, step up to the FR570 or FR970.
Does the Forerunner 965 have a speaker and microphone?
No. The FR965 does not have a built-in speaker or microphone for voice calls. For voice calling from the wrist, choose the FR570 ($549.99) or FR970 ($749.99).
