Garmin Forerunner® 165 GPS Running Smartwatch

The Forerunner 165 is Garmin's budget-friendly AMOLED GPS running smartwatch, released February 2024. It brings a vibrant 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, Garmin Pay, barometric altimeter, HRV Status, and Morning Report to an accessible $249.99 price point — or $299.99 for the Music edition with 8GB storage for Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer. Lightweight at 39 grams with up to 11 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, the FR165 bridges the gap between the entry-level FR55 and the mid-range FR265.

Our Take: The FR165 is the sweet spot for runners who want a modern AMOLED display and Garmin Pay without paying $450+ for features they may not need. It covers the essentials — GPS tracking, heart rate, daily suggested workouts, Garmin Coach, Running Power, HRV Status, and Morning Report — at $249.99 (or $299.99 with music). The main things you give up vs the FR265 are multi-band GPS, Training Readiness/Status, Race Widget, Real-Time Stamina, and triathlon mode. For casual to intermediate runners, the FR165 is the best bang for your buck in the AMOLED Forerunner lineup.

Who this watch is perfect for

  • Runners who want a modern AMOLED display and Garmin Pay without paying $450+ for advanced training analytics.
  • Athletes upgrading from a Forerunner 55 or older watch who want a touchscreen, barometric altimeter, and HRV Status.
  • Budget-conscious runners who want music on their wrist — the FR165 Music ($299.99) is $150 less than the FR265.
  • Casual to intermediate runners who don't need Training Readiness, Training Status, or triathlon mode.

You may prefer a different Forerunner if…

  • You want full training analytics (Training Readiness, Training Status, Race Widget, Stamina) — step up to the Forerunner 265 ($449.99).
  • You want triathlon mode and multi-band GPS — the FR265 or FR570 ($549.99) add these.
  • You want on-watch maps — step up to the Forerunner 965 ($599.99) or Forerunner 970 ($749.99).
  • You want the absolute lowest price — the Forerunner 55 ($199.99) saves $50 but uses a MIP display without touchscreen.

Forerunner® 165 — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Forerunner 165 and the Forerunner 165 Music?

The only difference is music storage. The FR165 Music ($299.99) includes 8GB storage for offline playlists from Spotify, Amazon Music, or Deezer. The base FR165 ($249.99) has 4GB storage without music capability. Both share identical hardware, sensors, display, and all other features including Garmin Pay.

What is the difference between the Forerunner 165 and the Forerunner 265?

The FR265 ($449.99) adds multi-band GPS with SatIQ (vs multi-GNSS), Training Status, Training Readiness, Race Widget, Real-Time Stamina, triathlon mode, and a larger display option (46mm). The FR165 ($249.99) saves $200 and still includes AMOLED, Garmin Pay, barometric altimeter, HRV Status, and daily suggested workouts. If you want full training analytics, choose the FR265. If you want a great AMOLED running watch at the best price, the FR165 delivers.

Does the Forerunner 165 have Training Readiness or Training Status?

No. The FR165 includes Morning Report, HRV Status, Running Power, and daily suggested workouts — but not Training Readiness, Training Status, Race Widget, or Real-Time Stamina. For those advanced analytics, step up to the Forerunner 265 ($449.99) or higher.

Does the Forerunner 165 have multi-band GPS?

No. The FR165 uses multi-GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) but does not support multi-band frequencies or SatIQ. For multi-band GPS with SatIQ, step up to the Forerunner 265 ($449.99) or higher. For most runners in open environments, multi-GNSS provides excellent accuracy.

Is the Forerunner 165 good for beginners?

Yes. The FR165 is an excellent choice for runners who want a modern AMOLED display and Garmin Pay at an accessible price. It includes Garmin Coach with free adaptive 5K, 10K, and half-marathon training plans, daily suggested workouts, and wrist-based Running Power — all in a lightweight 39g package.

Does the Forerunner 165 have a barometric altimeter?

Yes. Unlike the FR55, the FR165 includes a barometric altimeter for accurate elevation tracking, floor counting, and better workout data on hilly terrain. This is a meaningful upgrade from the FR55's GPS-only elevation.

Does the Forerunner 165 support triathlon mode?

No. The FR165 supports 25+ sport profiles including running, cycling, and pool swimming, but does not have a dedicated triathlon or multisport mode with auto sport-change. For triathlon mode, step up to the Forerunner 265 ($449.99) or higher.
