Garmin Edge® 550 GPS Cycling Computer
Compact GPS cycling computer with vivid 2.7-inch transmissive LCD (1,000 nits), reliable button controls, Smart Fueling, Cycling Coach, preloaded maps with Trailforks, 5Hz GPS, up to 36 hours in battery saver mode. $499.99.
Our Take: The Edge 550 is the best-value current-gen Edge. It gets the same brilliant 2.7-inch transmissive LCD as the flagship Edge 1050 and the Edge 850 — 1,000 nits, 420×600 resolution, vivid colors that make maps pop and data fields easy to read in direct sunlight. It gets nearly every software feature from the x50 generation: Cycling Coach, Smart Fueling, 5Hz GPS, Trailforks with Forksight, weather radar overlays, GroupRide data, enduro and downhill profiles, timing gates, gear ratio analysis, and road hazard alerts. All for $499.99, which is $100 less than the Edge 850 and $200 less than the Edge 1050. What you give up: the touchscreen, speaker with bike bell and voice prompts, Garmin Pay, and on-device course creation. The 550 uses a beeper instead of a full speaker. For many riders, those are nice-to-haves, not essentials. Buttons work reliably in rain, mud, and with thick gloves — conditions where touchscreens can be frustrating. If you create routes primarily on your phone or computer anyway, the on-device course creator is unnecessary. And if you carry a credit card on rides, Garmin Pay is redundant. The honest trade-off vs. the Edge 840 at $449.99: the 840 has much better battery life (26h vs 12h), a touchscreen, lighter weight (85g vs ~110g), and an available solar option. But the 840’s screen is noticeably dimmer and lower resolution, and it lacks the x50-generation features like Cycling Coach, Smart Fueling, 5Hz GPS, Trailforks, weather radar, and GroupRide. If battery life is your priority, the 840 wins. If screen quality and modern features matter more, the 550 is the better buy at just $50 more.
Why you’d choose this cycling computer
- The Edge 550 uses the identical transmissive LCD as the flagship Edge 1050 and the Edge 850 — 2.7 inches, 420×600 resolution, 1,000 nits peak brightness. Vivid colors, crisp maps, readable in direct sunlight. A generational leap over the Edge 540’s transflective screen.
- Seven physical buttons give you full control in rain, mud, snow, or with thick winter gloves. No accidental touches from sweat or water on the screen. Many cyclists prefer the tactile reliability and muscle memory of buttons, especially during intense efforts or rough terrain.
- Get custom hydration and nutrition alerts based on your fitness, power output, temperature, and humidity. Free Garmin Cycling Coach plans adapt to your training, recovery patterns, and specific course demands for upcoming events. Previously reserved for premium Edge models.
- Full topographic and cycling maps come preloaded for road, gravel, and trail. Trailforks trail maps are built in with Forksight mode that shows detailed information about upcoming trail forks before you reach them. Navigate confidently on any surface.
- Multi-band GNSS with 5Hz recording (5 samples per second) during descents for pin-point accuracy on trails. Enduro and downhill profiles, timing gates for segment splits, and post-ride trail breakdowns. Purpose-built for road, gravel, and mountain.
- Real-time GroupRide data comparisons (your stats vs. group average for HR, power, cadence, speed). Live weather radar overlays showing wind and rain on the map. Incident detection, LiveTrack, road hazard alerts, and Varia radar/camera compatibility.
- When paired with electronic shifting (Shimano Di2, SRAM eTap/AXS), see post-ride data on which gears you used the most. Useful for dialing in chainring and cassette choices for your riding style and terrain.
- Same screen, same battery, same core features. The Edge 550 delivers the premium x50-generation experience at $499.99 — $100 less than the Edge 850 and $200 less than the Edge 1050. The savings come from dropping the touchscreen, speaker, Garmin Pay, and on-device course creator.

Edge 550 — Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the Edge 550 and Edge 850?
They share the same 2.7-inch transmissive LCD (420×600, 1,000 nits), same case size (54.6×92.2×16.8 mm), same battery life (12h demanding / 36h saver), and the same core training, navigation, and safety features. The Edge 850 ($599.99) adds a touchscreen, built-in speaker with bike bell and voice prompts, Garmin Pay contactless payments, on-device course creation, and doubles storage to 64 GB. The 550 is button-only with a beeper instead of a speaker and 32 GB storage. If you don’t need touch, the bike bell, voice prompts, or Garmin Pay, the 550 saves you $100 while delivering the same display quality and cycling features.
Does the Edge 550 have a touchscreen?
No. The Edge 550 is operated entirely by physical buttons — seven in total. There is no touchscreen. Some cyclists prefer buttons because they work reliably in rain, with thick winter gloves, and don’t accidentally trigger from sweat or water. If you want both touchscreen and buttons, the Edge 850 ($599.99) provides that combination.
How does the Edge 550 compare to the Edge 840?
The Edge 550 replaces the Edge 540 as Garmin’s premium button-controlled compact Edge. Compared to the Edge 840: the 550 has a dramatically brighter and sharper 2.7-inch transmissive LCD (420×600, 1,000 nits) vs. the 840’s 2.6-inch transflective TFT (246×322). The 550 adds Cycling Coach, Smart Fueling, 5Hz GPS, Trailforks with Forksight, weather radar overlays, GroupRide data, enduro/downhill profiles, timing gates, and gear ratio analysis. The 840 has significantly better battery life (26h vs. 12h in demanding use), a touchscreen, lighter weight (85g vs. ~110g), and an available solar option. The 840 costs $449.99 vs. $499.99 for the 550.
Is the battery life really only 12 hours?
Garmin rates the Edge 550 at up to 12 hours in demanding conditions (active navigation, paired sensors, bright display) and up to 36 hours in battery saver mode. The brighter transmissive LCD consumes more power than the older transflective screens. Reducing brightness can extend real-world battery life. If battery life is critical for ultra-endurance riding, the Edge 840 (26h) or Edge 840 Solar (up to 42h) are better choices.
Does the Edge 550 have a solar option?
No. Unlike the previous Edge 540 (which had a Solar model), the Edge 550 does not offer solar charging. The transmissive LCD technology is not compatible with Garmin’s PowerGlass solar layer. If solar charging matters to you, the Edge 840 Solar remains available.
What sensors and accessories are compatible?
The Edge 550 connects via ANT+ and Bluetooth LE to heart rate monitors, power meters, speed/cadence sensors, Shimano Di2 and SRAM eTap electronic shifting, smart trainers, Garmin Varia radar and camera systems, and Garmin Rally power meter pedals. Wi-Fi is built in for syncing rides and firmware updates. The Edge 550 is compatible with Connect IQ for custom apps and data fields.
What’s in the box?
Edge 550 GPS cycling computer, out-front bike mount, standard mount with rubber bands, tether, USB-C charging/data cable, and documentation. Heart rate monitors, speed/cadence sensors, and power meters are sold separately. Bundle options with sensors may be available.
