Garmin Descent™ X50i Premium Dive Computer
Garmin’s flagship large-format dive computer. 3″ color touchscreen (surface), sapphire lens, 20 ATM/200m, SubWave™ air integration (up to 8 tanks), diver-to-diver messaging, DiveView™ bathymetric maps, integrated backup dive light, multi-gas/trimix, Bühlmann ZHL-16c with gradient factors, 32 GB storage. $1,499.99.
Our Take: The Descent X50i is Garmin’s most capable dedicated dive computer, and it earns that position with a feature set that no other console-style computer in the lineup can match. The 3-inch color display is simply massive for a dive computer — DiveView maps, ascent profiles, depth charts, and multi-tank status all benefit from the extra screen real estate. The touchscreen works only on the surface (Garmin made the right call here — underwater touchscreens are unreliable), while the leakproof metal buttons handle all in-water navigation. SubWave sonar is the standout technology. Air integration with up to 8 T2 transceivers gives you real-time tank pressure, consumption rate, and remaining time on every gas supply. For technical divers running multiple stages, cave divers, or dive leaders monitoring a group, this transforms situational awareness. The diver-to-diver messaging (preset messages up to 30m, monitoring up to 10m) adds a communication layer that simply doesn’t exist on most dive computers. The 20 ATM/200m depth rating with sapphire crystal and integrated backup dive light means this is ready for deep technical work, caves, and wreck penetration where redundancy matters. DiveView maps with 4,000+ dive sites help you plan dives before you splash, and TopoActive surface maps with GPS get you to the site. At $1,499.99, the X50i is a significant investment. The trade-offs vs. watch-style computers: no CCR mode, no apnea/freediving modes, no smartwatch or health features, and shorter battery life in dive mode (16 hours medium vs. 30 hours on the Mk3 43mm). If you want air integration with a watch you wear every day, the Mk3i (from $1,399.99) is the alternative. If you want a large-format console without air integration at half the price, the X30 ($749.99) shares the same algorithm and gas support. But if you want the biggest screen, the deepest rating, air integration, DiveView maps, diver messaging, and a dive light in one device — the X50i is the only Garmin that puts all of it together.
Why you’d choose the Descent X50i
- The 3-inch color LCD (640 × 360 pixels) is the largest display on any Garmin dive computer. Touchscreen works on the surface for setup, maps, and settings. Underwater, leakproof metal buttons provide reliable control. The large format makes critical data like ascent profiles, depth charts, and DiveView maps easy to read at a glance.
- Pair with Descent T2 transceivers (sold separately) to monitor tank pressure, air time remaining, and consumption rate for up to 8 tanks via the SubWave sonar data network. See real-time tank data right on your wrist — essential for technical diving with multiple stages or for dive leaders monitoring a group.
- Exchange preset messages with other SubWave-equipped divers (X50i or Mk3i with T2 transceivers) up to 30 meters away. Monitor tank pressure, depth, and distance for up to 8 divers within 10 meters. A critical safety tool for buddy teams, dive leaders, and group dives where verbal communication isn’t possible.
- Preloaded DiveView color maps extend TopoActive surface maps with underwater bathymetric depth contours for over 4,000 dive sites worldwide. Plan dives with depth, terrain, and point-of-interest data before you enter the water. Navigate to sites using surface GPS and TopoActive maps, then explore underwater with full situational awareness.
- Rated to 20 ATM (200 meters / 656 feet), designed to comply with EN 13319. Sapphire crystal lens resists scratches at depth. Leakproof metal buttons and fiber-reinforced polymer case withstand extreme pressure. The integrated backup dive light provides visibility when you need it most — accessible above and below water.
- Supports air, nitrox, and trimix up to 100% O₂ with 1 bottom gas and up to 11 deco/backup gases. Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm with user-configurable gradient factors. Ascent dive profile visualizes your projected depth plan including decompression stops and gas switches. In-dive depth chart shows real-time depth history to guide your ascent.
- A built-in backup dive light is always within reach — above or below the surface. Provides illumination in low-visibility conditions, during night dives, or when primary lighting fails. One less accessory to carry and one more layer of safety for every dive.
- Store up to 200 dives on the device. 32 GB of onboard storage holds DiveView maps, TopoActive maps, and dive data. Auto-sync to the Garmin Dive™ app via Bluetooth, ANT+, or Wi-Fi. Review depth profiles, temperature data, gas consumption, and more. Track gear, take notes, and share your dive history.

Descent X50i — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Descent X50i?
The Descent X50i is Garmin’s flagship large-format dive computer. It features a 3-inch color touchscreen display (surface only), sapphire crystal lens, 20 ATM (200 meter) depth rating, air integration via SubWave sonar with up to 8 Descent T2 tank transmitters, diver-to-diver messaging up to 30 meters, DiveView™ bathymetric maps for 4,000+ dive sites, an integrated backup dive light, and 32 GB of onboard storage for up to 200 dive logs. It uses the Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm with configurable gradient factors and supports air, nitrox, and trimix up to 100% O₂ with 1 bottom gas and up to 11 deco/backup gases.
Does the X50i include a T2 transmitter?
No. The Descent T2 transceiver is sold separately. The X50i supports pairing with up to 8 T2 transmitters for air integration, tank pressure monitoring, and diver-to-diver messaging via SubWave sonar. You can purchase the T2 as a standalone accessory or as a bundle with the X50i.
Is the touchscreen usable underwater?
No. The touchscreen only functions on the surface for setup, map navigation, and settings. Underwater, you use the leakproof metal buttons to operate the computer. This is a deliberate design choice — touchscreens are unreliable underwater due to water conductivity and pressure, so buttons ensure reliable control at depth.
How does the X50i compare to the X30?
The X30 ($749.99) is the value-focused large-format console. The X50i ($1,499.99) adds: a larger 3-inch touchscreen (vs. 2.4-inch LCD), sapphire lens (vs. chemically strengthened glass), 20 ATM/200m depth rating (vs. 10 ATM/100m), air integration via SubWave, diver-to-diver messaging, DiveView bathymetric maps, integrated dive light, TopoActive surface maps, Wi-Fi, 32 GB storage (vs. unspecified), and a carrying case. Both share the same Bühlmann ZHL-16c algorithm, multi-gas/trimix support with 1 bottom + 11 deco/backup gases, surface GPS, and 3-axis compass. If you don’t need air integration, deep tech diving, or DiveView maps, the X30 is an excellent choice at half the price.
How does the X50i compare to the Mk3i?
The Mk3i (from $1,399.99) is a watch-style dive computer that doubles as a multisport GPS smartwatch. It shares SubWave air integration and diver-to-diver messaging with the X50i, but adds: 200m depth rating, CCR (closed-circuit rebreather) mode, apnea/freediving modes, health tracking, music, Garmin Pay, wrist heart rate, and Dive Readiness scoring. The X50i’s advantage is the much larger 3-inch display vs. 1.2″ or 1.4″ AMOLED, the integrated backup dive light, and the dedicated dive-first interface. Choose the X50i if you want the biggest, clearest display and a dive-dedicated device. Choose the Mk3i if you want a watch you can wear every day with full smartwatch features.
What gas mixes does the X50i support?
Air, nitrox, and trimix up to 100% O₂. You can configure 1 bottom gas and up to 11 decompression and/or backup gases. The X50i does not support CCR (closed-circuit rebreather) mode — for that, you need the Descent Mk3 or Mk3i.
What’s in the box?
Descent X50i premium dive computer, 2 elastic nylon bands with adjustable locking buckles, carrying case, charging clip/cable, band removal tool, and documentation. The Descent T2 transceiver for air integration is sold separately.
What is SubWave sonar?
SubWave is Garmin’s proprietary sonar-based underwater communication technology. On the X50i, it enables two functions: (1) Air integration — monitor tank pressure, air time remaining, and consumption rate for up to 8 tanks via Descent T2 transceivers within 10 meters. (2) Diver-to-diver messaging — send preset messages to other SubWave-equipped divers (X50i or Mk3i with T2) up to 30 meters away. Messaging requires line of sight between transceivers.
