Garmin Handlebar Controller for zūmo® XT2 & Tread® Devices
Wired 4-button navigator controller for motorcycle, snowmobile & ATV — zoom maps, control music and mark waypoints without lifting your hands from the grips. MPN 010-02974-00. $149.99.
Our Take: If you ride a zūmo XT2 or a Tread device, the Handlebar Controller is one of the most practical $149 you can spend. Reaching across to tap a touchscreen at speed — especially with thick gloves on — is a real safety compromise. Four large physical buttons mounted at your thumb do the job instead: zoom, map layer, waypoint, and anything else you reassign. The IP67 housing and wired power mean zero worries in rain, cold, or extreme heat. The one friction point is the Y-adapter cable required for installation (sold separately, varies by device), but that’s a one-time wiring task. Every ride after that is hands-on-grips, eyes-on-road navigation control.
Why you’d add this to your setup
- Full navigator control — hands never leave the grips Zoom in/out, cycle map layers, mark waypoints, and control music using four large physical buttons mounted at your thumb. No touchscreen required at any speed or in any conditions.
- Glove-friendly — works with any riding gloves Oversized buttons require firm, deliberate presses — not swipes or light taps. Works equally well with thin summer gloves, thick winter gauntlets, or off-road knuckle guards. No capacitive touch surface involved.
- Fully remappable via on-device Handlebar Controller app The Handlebar Controller app, built into your compatible navigator, lets you reconfigure each of the four buttons independently. Reassign to music skip, volume, brightness, or any other supported function — no computer required.
- Wired power — no batteries, no Bluetooth, no dropouts Draws power directly from the navigator’s accessory connector, fed from your bike’s 12V system. No battery management, no pairing delays. Reliable at sub-zero and extreme desert heat temperatures where wireless peripherals can fail.
- IP67 — fully sealed for all-weather, all-terrain riding IP67 means complete dust ingress protection and water immersion protection to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Rain, mud, river crossings, and road spray all fall within spec. Built for year-round adventure use.
- Fits 7⁄8″, 1″, and 1‑1⁄4″ handlebars — bushings included Three rubber bushings are included covering the three most common handlebar diameters in motorcycling and powersports. Clamp-and-bushing installation; no special tools required. Mount left bar, thumb reach.
- Compatible with zūmo XT2, Tread 2, Tread 8″ & 10″ models Works across the full current Tread lineup (Tread 2, Tread Overland, Tread SxS, Tread XL Baja Chase, Tread XL Baja Race, Tread XL Overland) and the zūmo XT2. Y-adapter required — varies by model. See the compatibility guide below.
- Included in zūmo XT2 complete bundle — check yours first Garmin includes the Handlebar Controller and Y-Adapter Kit in the zūmo XT2 complete bundle. If you bought the full bundle, you may already own one. This standalone listing is for Tread device owners, or XT2 navigator-only buyers.
Who this is for
- Any zūmo XT2 or Tread device owner who regularly rides with gloves, in cold weather, off-road, or at speeds where tapping the touchscreen is a safety risk.
- Adventure and dual-sport riders who adjust routes on the fly — dropping a waypoint or switching to topo view without stopping saves time and attention.
- Riders streaming music through a connected helmet or headset who want physical skip/pause without unlocking the navigator screen.
- Snowmobilers and ATV/SxS riders operating Tread devices in sub-zero conditions where touchscreen interaction is impractical with heavy gloves.
- zūmo XT2 owners who purchased the navigator alone (not the complete bundle) and need to add handlebar control separately.
Important before you order
- A Y-adapter cable is required and sold separately. The specific adapter varies by navigator model — see the compatibility guide below before ordering.
- Not compatible with the original zūmo XT (1st gen), zūmo 396, zūmo 595/590, or original Tread/Tread XL models.
- If you bought the zūmo XT2 complete bundle, the Handlebar Controller and Y-Adapter are already included — verify your bundle contents before purchasing this separately.
- Navigator sold separately. This is an accessory only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Garmin Handlebar Controller work with the zūmo XT2?
Yes. The Handlebar Controller is compatible with the zūmo XT2, but requires the Handlebar Controller & Group Ride Radio Y-Adapter Kit (6-inch devices), sold separately, to connect. The Y-adapter splits the navigator’s accessory connector to support both the Handlebar Controller and the Group Ride Radio simultaneously. Note: the complete zūmo XT2 bundle already includes the Handlebar Controller and Y-Adapter Kit — check your bundle contents before ordering this separately.
Which Garmin Tread devices are compatible?
Compatible models: Tread 2 (6″), Tread Overland Edition (8″), Tread SxS Edition (8″), Tread XL Baja Chase Edition (10″), Tread XL Baja Race Edition (10″), Tread XL Overland Edition (10″). Tread 2 requires the Handlebar Controller & Group Ride Tracker Y-Adapter Kit; Tread 8″ and 10″ models require the Tread/Tread 2 Group Ride Tracker Y-Adapter Cable, both sold separately. The original first-generation Tread and Tread XL are not compatible.
Can I use it wearing gloves?
Yes — glove-friendly operation is the core value proposition. Four large buttons require firm, deliberate presses rather than swipes or light taps, working equally well with thin summer mesh gloves, thick winter gauntlets, or off-road knuckle guards. No capacitive touchscreen technology involved.
What are the default button functions, and can I change them?
Defaults: Button 1 (top-left) — Zoom In; Button 2 (top-right) — Zoom Out; Button 3 (bottom-left) — Cycle Map Layers/Pages; Button 4 (bottom-right) — Mark Waypoint. All four can be independently reconfigured via the Handlebar Controller app built into your compatible navigator. Alternatives include music play/pause, skip, volume, and other device-supported functions. Settings save to the device and persist between rides.
Can I control music from the Handlebar Controller?
Yes. Music control is one of the available remappable button actions. Default configuration prioritizes navigation functions, but any button can be reassigned to music play/pause, track skip, or volume via the Handlebar Controller app on the navigator. Useful if streaming music to a connected Bluetooth helmet or headset.
Does it need batteries or charging?
No. The Handlebar Controller is wired directly to the navigator’s accessory connector and draws power from the navigator, which is fed by the bike’s 12V electrical system. No batteries to replace, no charging port, no wireless pairing. Wired power also means reliable operation at temperature extremes where battery-powered or Bluetooth accessories can underperform.
What handlebar sizes does it fit?
Three rubber bushings are included: 7/8 inch (22.225 mm), 1 inch (25.4 mm), and 1‑1/4 inch (31.75 mm) — covering the vast majority of motorcycle, ATV, and snowmobile handlebars. Garmin recommends mounting on the left bar, close to the left grip, within natural thumb reach without releasing the handlebar.
Is it waterproof?
The Handlebar Controller is IP67 rated: fully dust-sealed (IP6X) and protected against temporary water immersion to 1 meter depth for up to 30 minutes (IPX7). Rain, mud, stream crossings, and road spray are all within the design spec. Not designed for prolonged submersion or high-pressure jet washing aimed directly at the unit.
