Garmin fēnix® 8 Solar Sapphire GPS Smartwatch
The fēnix 8 Solar is Garmin's battery-life champion in the fēnix 8 lineup, released August 2024. Instead of an AMOLED display, it uses Garmin's Power Sapphire™ solar charging lens over an always-on MIP display — delivering up to 28 days of battery in the 47mm and an extraordinary 48 days in the 51mm. Despite the different display technology, the Solar shares every other feature with the fēnix 8 AMOLED Sapphire: Gen 5 HR sensor with ECG, titanium bezel, sapphire crystal, LED flashlight, speaker and microphone, preloaded topographic maps, multi-band GPS with SatIQ, and 40-meter dive rating. Available in 47mm ($999.99) and 51mm ($1,099.99).
Our Take: The fēnix 8 Solar is the endurance pick. If battery life is your top priority, nothing in the fēnix 8 family comes close — up to 48 days in the 51mm model, with solar extending every mode. The MIP display is always-on and exceptional in bright sunlight, though it's less vibrant than AMOLED in low-light conditions. The tradeoff is purely about the screen: you lose the rich colors and high contrast of AMOLED, but gain dramatically longer battery and solar charging. Every other feature is identical to the fēnix 8 AMOLED Sapphire — Gen 5 sensor, ECG, titanium bezel, sapphire, speaker/mic, flashlight, maps, and 40m dive rating. At $999.99 (47mm) or $1,099.99 (51mm), it's the same price as the entry-level fēnix 8 AMOLED models.
Why you'd choose this model
- Garmin's Power Sapphire solar charging lens harvests sunlight to extend battery life in every mode. Up to 28 days (47mm) or 48 days (51mm) in smartwatch mode. The longest battery in the fēnix 8 family.
- Memory-in-pixel (MIP) display is always visible without raising your wrist. Excellent in direct sunlight where AMOLED screens can struggle. No battery drain from keeping the screen on.
- Same Gen 5 sensor as the fēnix 8 AMOLED and Pro. ECG for atrial fibrillation detection. Skin temperature tracking. No compromises on health features.
- Premium titanium bezel and Power Sapphire lens — the same scratch-resistant materials as the fēnix 8 AMOLED Sapphire, with the added benefit of solar charging built into the lens.
- Dive-rated to 40m with leakproof buttons and metal sensor guard. Built-in LED flashlight with white and red modes. Identical to fēnix 8 AMOLED.
- Built-in speaker and mic for phone calls via Bluetooth and offline voice commands. Same as fēnix 8 AMOLED and Pro.
- TopoActive maps with relief shading preloaded on the watch. Multi-band GPS + SatIQ for best accuracy while optimizing battery. ClimbPro, NextFork, round-trip routing.
- The Solar starts at the same $999.99 as the base fēnix 8 AMOLED. You're choosing between display types, not paying more for better battery life.
Who this watch is perfect for
- Ultra-endurance athletes who need weeks of battery — thru-hikers, multi-day backpackers, expedition runners.
- Outdoor enthusiasts who spend most of their time in bright sunlight where MIP excels.
- Anyone who hates charging their watch and wants to go 3–7 weeks between charges.
- Athletes who want every fēnix 8 feature (Gen 5, ECG, maps, flashlight, speaker) with maximum battery.
You may prefer a different fēnix if…
- You value a vibrant, colorful display — the fēnix 8 AMOLED ($999.99+) has a brighter, richer screen at the same price.
- You want standalone LTE/satellite connectivity — the fēnix 8 Pro ($1,199.99+) adds inReach for phone-free messaging and SOS.
- You want a smaller 43mm option — the fēnix 8 AMOLED comes in 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm. The Solar is 47mm and 51mm only.
- Budget is key — the fēnix E ($799.99) delivers AMOLED, maps, and the full training suite at $200 less.

fēnix® 8 Solar — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the fēnix 8 Solar and fēnix 8 AMOLED?
The Solar uses a memory-in-pixel (MIP) display with Garmin's Power Sapphire solar charging lens for extreme battery life — up to 28 days (47mm) or 48 days (51mm) with solar. The AMOLED has a brighter, more vibrant touchscreen but shorter battery (16–29 days depending on size). Every other feature is identical: Gen 5 sensor, ECG, sapphire, titanium, speaker/mic, flashlight, maps, 40m dive. They start at the same $999.99 price. Choose Solar for endurance; AMOLED for the best screen.
Does the fēnix 8 Solar have an AMOLED display?
No. The Solar uses a memory-in-pixel (MIP) display. MIP is always-on without battery drain and is excellent in direct sunlight. However, it's less vibrant and lower resolution than AMOLED, especially in low-light conditions. The benefit is dramatically longer battery life plus solar charging capability.
Does the fēnix 8 Solar have ECG, speaker/mic, and flashlight?
Yes to all three. The fēnix 8 Solar has the Gen 5 sensor with ECG, built-in speaker and microphone, and LED flashlight — identical to the fēnix 8 AMOLED. The only difference between them is the display technology and battery life.
How long does the battery last on the fēnix 8 Solar?
47mm: up to 28 days smartwatch with solar, up to 42 hours GPS. 51mm: up to 48 days smartwatch with solar, up to 78 hours GPS. These are the longest battery figures in the entire fēnix 8 lineup. Actual solar benefit depends on outdoor exposure — Garmin assumes 3 hours/day outside in 50,000 lux conditions.
Does the fēnix 8 Solar have inReach connectivity?
No. Only the fēnix 8 Pro ($1,199.99+) has built-in inReach LTE and satellite for phone-free messaging and SOS. The Solar relies on your paired phone for connectivity, same as the fēnix 8 AMOLED.
What sizes does the fēnix 8 Solar come in?
The fēnix 8 Solar comes in 47mm ($999.99) and 51mm ($1,099.99). There is no 43mm Solar option. For a smaller fēnix with AMOLED, the fēnix 8 AMOLED comes in 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm.
Is the MIP display worse than AMOLED?
Different, not worse. MIP excels in direct sunlight — it's always-on and fully visible without backlighting. AMOLED offers richer colors, deeper blacks, and better low-light readability. MIP is lower resolution (280×280 vs 454×454 on AMOLED). For most outdoor athletes who spend significant time in sunlight, MIP is arguably better. For everyday smartwatch use and indoor viewing, AMOLED wins.
