Garmin fēnix® 8 AMOLED Sapphire GPS Smartwatch
The fēnix 8 AMOLED Sapphire is the core premium multisport GPS smartwatch in Garmin's fēnix 8 lineup, released August 2024. It's the first mainline fēnix with an AMOLED display — vibrant colors, deep blacks, and excellent readability in all lighting conditions. Combined with the Elevate Gen 5 HR sensor, ECG, titanium bezel, sapphire crystal, built-in speaker and microphone, LED flashlight, preloaded topographic maps, multi-band GPS with SatIQ, and 40-meter dive rating, it delivers every premium feature Garmin offers in the fēnix line. Available in three sizes — 43mm ($999.99), 47mm ($1,099.99), and 51mm ($1,199.99) — with up to 29 days of battery life in the 51mm model.
Our Take: The fēnix 8 AMOLED Sapphire is the sweet spot in the fēnix 8 lineup. It has every premium feature — Gen 5 sensor, ECG, sapphire, titanium, speaker/mic, flashlight, maps, 40m dive — without the added cost and thickness of the Pro's inReach connectivity. The AMOLED display is a genuine upgrade from older MIP-based fēnix models: maps are clearer, data fields are crisper, and the always-on option looks fantastic. With three size options (including the exclusive 43mm for smaller wrists), starting at $999.99, it's $200 more than the fēnix E but the hardware upgrades are substantial. The only reasons to look elsewhere: the Solar model if you need extreme battery life, or the Pro if you need standalone LTE/satellite.
Why you'd choose this model
- Rich colors, deep blacks, 454×454 resolution (47/51mm). Always-on option. Excellent readability in all conditions. A major upgrade from MIP displays on older fēnix models.
- 43mm, 47mm, and 51mm. The 43mm is exclusive to the AMOLED — no other fēnix 8 variant offers a smaller option. Great for smaller wrists or anyone who prefers a compact watch.
- Garmin's latest Elevate Gen 5 optical heart rate sensor. ECG app for atrial fibrillation detection. Skin temperature tracking for overnight trends. Major upgrade from the fēnix E's Gen 4.
- Sapphire crystal for maximum scratch resistance. Titanium bezel options for lightweight, premium durability. A meaningful upgrade from the fēnix E's Gorilla Glass and stainless steel.
- Make phone calls via Bluetooth, use offline voice commands, and light your way with white/red LED flashlight. Not available on the fēnix E.
- Dive-rated to 40m with leakproof buttons and metal sensor guard. MIL-STD-810 tested. A significant upgrade from the fēnix E's 10ATM rating.
- TopoActive maps preloaded with relief shading. Multi-band GPS + SatIQ for best accuracy. ClimbPro, NextFork, round-trip routing, ski maps for 2,000+ resorts.
- 51mm gets up to 29 days smartwatch. 47mm up to 16 days. 43mm up to 10 days. Starting at $999.99 for the 43mm — the most affordable way to get the full fēnix 8 feature set.
Who this watch is perfect for
- Athletes and adventurers who want every premium fēnix feature with a vibrant AMOLED display.
- Anyone with smaller wrists — the 43mm is exclusive to the AMOLED and unavailable on Solar or Pro.
- Runners, hikers, and triathletes upgrading from older fēnix/epix models who want the latest sensor and display tech.
- Outdoor enthusiasts who need maps, dive rating, and a flashlight but don't need standalone LTE/satellite connectivity.
You may prefer a different fēnix if…
- You want maximum battery life — the fēnix 8 Solar ($999.99+) gets up to 48 days with solar charging at the same price.
- You need standalone LTE/satellite connectivity — the fēnix 8 Pro ($1,199.99+) adds inReach for phone-free messaging and SOS.
- Budget is your top priority — the fēnix E ($799.99) has the same training suite and maps at $200 less.
- You spend most of your time outdoors in bright sunlight — the Solar's always-on MIP display may suit you better.

fēnix® 8 AMOLED — Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the fēnix 8 AMOLED and fēnix 8 Solar?
The AMOLED has a vibrant, high-resolution touchscreen (454×454 on 47/51mm) with rich colors and deep blacks. The Solar uses a MIP display with Garmin's Power Sapphire solar charging lens for dramatically longer battery — up to 48 days vs 29 days. Every other feature is identical: Gen 5 sensor, ECG, sapphire, titanium, speaker/mic, flashlight, dive mode, maps. They start at the same $999.99. Choose AMOLED for the best screen; Solar for maximum battery and sunlight readability.
What is the difference between the fēnix 8 AMOLED and fēnix 8 Pro?
The Pro adds built-in inReach LTE and satellite for phone-free messaging, voice calls, LiveTrack, and interactive SOS (subscription required, $7.99+/mo). It also has a brighter ~2,000-nit display and louder speakers. The standard AMOLED lacks standalone connectivity but is $100–200 less, thinner (~13.8mm vs ~16mm), and comes in 43mm. If you don't need phone-free connectivity, the AMOLED saves money with nearly identical performance.
What is the difference between the fēnix 8 AMOLED and fēnix E?
The fēnix E ($799.99) saves $200+ but uses the older Gen 4 sensor (no ECG, no skin temp), Gorilla Glass (not sapphire), stainless steel (not titanium), no speaker/mic, no flashlight, no dive mode, no depth sensor, no multi-band GPS, 16GB storage (not 32GB), and 10ATM instead of 40m dive rating. The fēnix 8 AMOLED ($999.99+) has every premium hardware feature. Both share the same training software.
Does the fēnix 8 AMOLED have ECG and dive mode?
Yes to both. The fēnix 8 AMOLED has the Gen 5 sensor with ECG for atrial fibrillation detection, and a hardware depth sensor with single gas scuba diving, apnea/freediving, and snorkeling modes — rated to 40m with dive log, NDL, safety stop alerts, and nitrox support.
What sizes does the fēnix 8 AMOLED come in?
43mm ($999.99), 47mm ($1,099.99), and 51mm ($1,199.99). The 43mm is exclusive to the AMOLED — no other fēnix 8 variant offers a smaller size. The 43mm has a 1.3-inch display (416×416) while the 47mm and 51mm have a 1.4-inch display (454×454). Both titanium and stainless steel bezel options are available.
How long does the battery last on the fēnix 8 AMOLED?
43mm: up to 10 days smartwatch, 20 hours GPS. 47mm: up to 16 days smartwatch, 30 hours GPS. 51mm: up to 29 days smartwatch, 56 hours GPS. For longer battery, the fēnix 8 Solar gets up to 48 days with solar charging at the same price.
Is the fēnix 8 AMOLED the same as the old Garmin epix?
Essentially yes. The Garmin epix was the AMOLED version of the fēnix — same features, different display. Garmin merged both lines under the fēnix 8 brand. The fēnix 8 AMOLED is the direct successor to the epix Pro Gen 2, adding a speaker/mic, depth sensor, dive mode, new UI, and larger displays.
