Our Take
This is the fēnix that replaces carrying a separate satellite communicator. With an active plan, you can text, take voice calls, share LiveTrack, pull weather, and trigger an interactive SOS to the Garmin Response coordination center from the wrist, with the phone left at the trailhead. The radios add nothing to the thickness: the 47 mm inReach is the same 13.8 mm as the non-inReach Pro, which is how Garmin undid the 16 mm bulge of the fēnix 8 Pro.
The generational news is that 43 mm now exists in this tier. The fēnix 8 Pro was 47 mm and 51 mm only, so anyone with a smaller wrist who wanted satellite SOS on a Garmin watch had no option at all until now. Battery also improves across every published mode against the fēnix 8 Pro while carrying the same radios: 18 days at 47 mm against 15, 31 days at 51 mm against 27.
What works over what
By default the watch uses your paired phone's connection when it is in Bluetooth range. Away from the phone it connects to LTE-M cellular from certain roaming providers. Where LTE is unavailable, only some features fall back to satellite.

Do I need a subscription for the inReach features?
Yes. All LTE and satellite features, including messaging, voice calls, LiveTrack, weather, Garmin Locate, and SOS, require an active inReach plan. The activation fee is waived and a free 30-day trial is included. If you suspend the plan after the trial, you keep up to 12 months of free emergency SOS messaging. Plan details and message usage are viewable in the watch settings. Without a plan, the watch still works as a full fēnix 9 Pro using your paired phone.
Where does the satellite connection work?
Coverage reaches the continental United States, select parts of Canada, and most of Europe. Above 65 degrees north the satellite network orbits below the horizon and cannot provide a connection at all. LTE coverage depends on roaming providers and is not available in every region. Some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit satellite communication devices. Garmin publishes coverage requirements at garmin.com and recommends sending a test message to testinreach@garmin.com outdoors before relying on the watch for a trip.
Which features work over satellite and which do not?
Over satellite you get text messages, location check-ins, weather forecasts, and interactive SOS. You do not get photo messages, voice messages, voice calls, LiveTrack, incident detection, assistance alerts, or Garmin Locate. All of those require LTE or a paired phone.
Is this the same as a standalone inReach device?
No. Dedicated inReach communicators use the Iridium low-earth-orbit network. This watch uses two-way geostationary satellites, which sit in a fixed position much farther away. That means you have to stop moving, get a clear view of the sky, face the satellite using an on-screen compass, and tilt the watch to the correct elevation angle. Connecting can take 30 seconds or more. For messaging while moving, in dense canopy, or at high latitude, a standalone inReach remains the more capable tool.
What is the difference between this and the fēnix 9 Pro without inReach?
They are the same watch except for the LTE and satellite radios. Adding inReach does not change the thickness, size, or weight of any model. The non-inReach Pro has no LTE, satellite messaging, SOS, satellite weather, or Garmin Locate, and costs $100 less at every size. The leather band options, Bone at 43 mm and Walnut at 47 and 51 mm, are exclusive to the inReach tier.
Which size should I buy?
The 47 mm is the balanced choice at 78 g, 13.8 mm thick, a 1.4-inch display, up to 18 days of smartwatch battery, and 16 hours of activity with LTE LiveTrack running. The 43 mm is the lightest at 62 g with up to 10 days and 9 hours of LTE LiveTrack. The 51 mm gets the largest display Garmin makes at 1.5 inches and 466 x 466, up to 31 days, and 27 hours of LTE LiveTrack, at 99 g. Solar is available only at 47 mm and 51 mm.
How much battery does LTE cost?
Running an activity with LTE LiveTrack active roughly halves your activity runtime against normal GPS. At 47 mm you get up to 32 hours in normal activity mode against 16 hours with LTE LiveTrack. LTE also runs in an Auto mode that connects only when an LTE feature is in use, which is far easier on the battery than Always On.
Should I buy the AMOLED or the Solar version?
Choose AMOLED unless charging access is a genuine constraint. Solar buys a lot of runtime, up to 34 days in smartwatch mode at 47 mm and 57 days at 51 mm with sun exposure, but it uses a memory-in-pixel display at 260 x 260 or 280 x 280 rather than AMOLED at 454 x 454 or 466 x 466. Solar models are also thicker and heavier. Radios, sensors, storage, and software are identical.
How does SOS work?
Holding the top-left button for five seconds initiates an interactive two-way SOS routed to the Garmin Response coordination center, which is staffed 24 hours a day. SOS works over a paired phone, over LTE, and over satellite. Garmin also offers search-and-rescue insurance plans for watches with built-in inReach.
Can I dive with the fēnix 9 Pro inReach?
Yes. Every fēnix 9 Pro is rated 10 ATM with a 40-meter dive rating to EN13319, with single-gas scuba, apnea, and snorkel profiles, the Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression model, and Nitrox support. Garmin advises against high-pressure washing, which can damage the depth sensor, and against removing the exterior guard between the right-side buttons, which protects the barometer.
