Garmin Forerunner® 970 (Garmin Certified Refurbished)

Garmin's flagship running and triathlon watch, restored by Garmin and sold with a full 1-year manufacturer warranty. 1.4″ AMOLED with a sapphire lens and titanium bezel, built-in LED flashlight, multi-band GPS with full-color maps, speaker and mic, and up to 15 days of battery, at $597.99 instead of $749.99. Available in French Gray / Indigo and Whitestone / Amp Yellow.

Our Take

The Forerunner 970 is the most complete running watch Garmin makes. It is a fēnix in a lighter case: full TopoActive maps on the wrist, multi-band GNSS, a 2,000-nit AMOLED display behind sapphire, an LED flashlight, on-wrist calls through the built-in speaker and mic, Garmin Pay, and 32 GB for offline Spotify or Amazon Music. Nothing in the Forerunner line sits above it.

Buying it renewed is the sensible way in. Garmin refurbishes these in-house, inspected, tested, cleaned, restored, and re-boxed, and they carry the same 1-year manufacturer warranty as a new unit, the same software, the same firmware updates, and the same Garmin Connect account features. The $152 you save puts you most of the way to an HRM 600 strap, which is what unlocks the 970's headline running-science metrics anyway.

Know what it is not: this is a 47 mm watch at roughly 56 g. If you have a slim wrist or you want something to disappear overnight, the 970 is a lot of watch. Running economy and step speed loss also require the HRM 600 chest strap, sold separately, the watch alone does not produce those two metrics.

Choose your colorway

French Gray / Indigo

Soft gold titanium bezel with a French Gray case and a French Gray / Translucent Indigo silicone band. The quieter of the two, and the one that reads closest to a everyday watch off the run.

Whitestone / Amp Yellow

Titanium bezel with a Whitestone case and an Amp Yellow silicone band. Higher contrast and more visible at a glance mid-race, and the brighter band shows up well in low light.

Both colorways are the same 47 mm watch with identical hardware, features, battery life, and warranty. Only the case, bezel finish, and band color differ. Bands are 22 mm quick-release and interchangeable between the two.

What "Garmin Certified Refurbished" actually means

Restored by Garmin

Inspected, tested, cleaned, and restored by Garmin to its own performance standards, not by a third-party refurbisher.

Full 1-year warranty

Backed by a 1-year Garmin manufacturer warranty, the same coverage period as a new Forerunner 970.

Identical software

Same firmware, same updates, same Garmin Connect and Connect IQ features. A renewed unit is not feature-limited in any way.

Lower impact

Buying renewed extends the life of a device already built and keeps working electronics out of the waste stream.

Garmin Forerunner 970: Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Garmin Certified Refurbished Forerunner 970 the same as new?

Functionally, yes. Garmin inspects, tests, cleans, and restores each unit to its own performance standards, then sells it with a full 1-year manufacturer warranty. The software, firmware updates, and Garmin Connect features are identical to a new watch. Cosmetically, renewed units are restored to like-new condition, and packaging is Garmin refurbished packaging rather than the retail box.

What warranty comes with the renewed Forerunner 970?

A 1-year Garmin manufacturer warranty, the same term Garmin provides on a new Forerunner 970. Heart Rate Monitors USA is an authorized Garmin dealer, so warranty service goes directly through Garmin.

Which colorways are available, and do they differ?

Two: French Gray / Indigo, with a soft gold titanium bezel and a French Gray / Translucent Indigo band, and Whitestone / Amp Yellow, with a titanium bezel and a bright Amp Yellow band. Hardware, features, battery life, price, and warranty are identical, so the choice is purely cosmetic. Both use 22 mm quick-release bands, so you can swap bands between them or fit any standard 22 mm strap later.

What is running economy, and why would I add the HRM 600?

Running economy measures the energy cost of running, expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per kilometer (ml/kg/km). Where VO2 max is the ceiling on how much oxygen your body can use, running economy is how efficiently you turn that oxygen into forward motion, so a lower number means you covered the same distance for less energy. Two runners with identical VO2 max can finish minutes apart because one is more economical.

The reason it needs the HRM 600 is step speed loss, the metric that captures how much you slow down each time your foot hits the ground. Garmin calculates running economy from your profile, run history, heart rate, speed, and running dynamics, with step speed loss as an essential input, and only a chest strap positioned at your center of mass can measure it. Wrist sensors cannot. The watch builds your running economy trend after several outdoor or track runs recorded with the strap.

Practically: if you are chasing a personal best and want to see whether a form change, a cadence change, or a new shoe actually made you more efficient, that is what the HRM 600 adds. If you want accurate heart rate, training readiness, and pace, the 970 already delivers that on its own.

Do I need the HRM 600 strap to use the Forerunner 970?

No. The watch works fully on its own, including wrist-based running dynamics and running power. Two specific metrics, running economy and step speed loss, require the HRM 600 chest strap, which is sold separately. Everything else, including Training Readiness, Training Status, VO2 max, and Garmin Coach, works without it.

How long does the Forerunner 970 battery last?

Up to 15 days in smartwatch mode with activity tracking, notifications, and wrist heart rate enabled. In GPS-only mode you get up to 26 hours, up to 23 hours on Auto Select, and up to 21 hours with all satellite systems and multi-band enabled. With music playing, expect up to 14 hours GPS-only or 12 hours on multi-band.

Can I swim with the Forerunner 970?

Yes. It is rated 5 ATM, equivalent to 50 meters of pressure, and has dedicated pool swim, open-water swim, and triathlon profiles. Multisport auto-transition records your swim-to-bike and bike-to-run splits automatically.

Forerunner 970 vs Forerunner 965, what changed?

The 970 keeps the 47 mm case and AMOLED display of the 965 but adds a titanium bezel, sapphire lens, brighter screen, built-in LED flashlight, speaker and microphone for on-wrist calls, an ECG app, and the new running science suite: running economy, step speed loss, and running tolerance. Battery in smartwatch mode also rises to 15 days.

Forerunner 970 vs Forerunner 265, which should I buy?

The 265 is the value pick: AMOLED, multi-band GPS, training readiness, and music, in a 46 mm or 41.7 mm case. What it does not have is built-in maps, a sapphire lens, a flashlight, a speaker and mic, the ECG app, or any access to running economy and step speed loss. If you run roads and race by pace, the 265 is plenty. If you navigate, race trail, train by running science, or want the watch to double as a smartwatch, the 970 is the one.

Does the renewed 970 get firmware updates?

Yes. Renewed units receive the same firmware and feature updates as new units through Garmin Express or Garmin Connect. There is no difference in software support.

What is the return policy on a renewed Garmin?

Renewed Garmin devices are covered by the standard Heart Rate Monitors USA return and exchange policy. Call 1-800-403-8285 before returning so we can issue an RMA.

Does the Forerunner 970 work with an existing Garmin account and sensors?

Yes. It pairs to the same free Garmin Connect account and works with HRM 600, HRM-Pro Plus, Varia radar and lights, Index scales, cycling power meters, and ANT+ or Bluetooth accessories you already own.

Metrics shown are intended to be close estimations of what is tracked and are not medical measurements. The ECG app is not available in all countries and is for people 22 years and older. Garmin Pay availability depends on country and payment network. Music streaming services require a separate subscription. Running economy and step speed loss require the HRM 600 monitor, sold separately.
