In The Box:
  • Polar RS300X training computer
  • Polar H1 heart rate sensor
  • RS300X Getting Started Guide

Body measurement features:
  • Automatic age-based target zone (bpm / %)-To help you train safely and effectively, the training computer determines your heart rate target zone limits automatically according to your age-based maximum heart rate (220 minus age). The limits are determined either in beats per minute (bpm), as a percentage (%) of your maximum heart rate, or as a heart rate reserve (% HRR). See also Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and Manual target zone.
  • Average and maximum heart rate of each lap
  • Average and maximum heart rate of training
  • Heart rate (bpm / %)- Heart rate is the measurement of the work your heart does. Heart rate can be expressed as the number of beats per minute (bpm) or as a percentage (%) of your maximum heart rate.
  • HR-based target zones with visual and audible alarm- You can define your target zones for a training session based on heart rate to help define the right intensity. When you are out of the preset zones, the training computer will give a visual and audible alarm.
  • HRmax (age-based)The highest number of heart beats per minute (bpm) during maximum physical exertion. For a rough estimate of your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220. HRmax is a useful tool for determining the intensity of training as intensity zones can be defined using HRmax. Some Polar products define maximum heart rate during the Polar Fitness Test, see also HRmax (Polar Fitness Test -based).
  • HRmax (user set)
  • Manual target zone (bpm / %)- This feature enables you to define the target zone as you want and is suitable for your training. You can set the target zone for your training as beats per minute (bpm), as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, or as a percentage of your heart rate reserve (HRR%).
  • Polar Fitness Test- Polar Fitness Test measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes. The result, Polar OwnIndex, evaluates your maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). With the Polar Fitness Test you can measure your aerobic fitness by yourself, automatically and without any exertion. All you need is your training computer. The Polar Fitness Test is as accurate in predicting the VO2max as any sub maximal fitness test. The test is based on heart rate and heart rate variability at rest and personal information.
  • Polar OwnCal (calorie expenditure)- Polar OwnCal calculates the number of kilocalories expended during training. This feature allows you to follow the kilocalories expended during one training session and cumulative kilocalories expended during several training sessions. Some Polar products also estimate the fat-burning percentage (fat% on display), that is, kilocalories expended from fat during a workout which is expressed as a percentage of the total kilocalories burned.
  • Polar OwnCode (5kHz) coded transmission- Coded heart rate transmission automatically locks in a code to transmit your heart rate to the training computer. The training computer picks up your heart rate from your transmitter only. Coding prevents interference from other training computers.
  • Polar OwnZone (personal heart rate zone)- Polar OwnZone determines your personal heart rate limits for a training session. Depending on the day and time, your physical state may vary, for instance, if you are stressed or tired, or if you are not fully recovered from your latest training session, Polar can determine that information from your heart rate and guide you to your ideal training zone for that moment.
  • Polar sport zones- Polar sport zones provide an easy way to select and monitor the intensity of your training and to follow sport zones based training programs. Training is divided into five zones based on percentages of your maximum heart rate: very light (50-60%HRmax), light (60-70%HRmax), moderate (70-80%HRmax), hard (80-90%HRmax) and maximum (90-100%HRmax).
  • Training load (available via polarpersonaltrainer.com)- This feature is available in Polar software. When you transfer training results from your training computer to polarpersonaltrainer.com, you can follow your training load and recovery in the training diary. Continuous monitoring of training load and recovery will help you recognize personal limits, avoid over- or undertraining, and adjust training intensity and duration according to your daily and weekly targets

Trip distance tells you the distance from the latest trip reset. Lap distance tells you the distance of one lap. Total distance is the distance accumulated since the last reset. Odometer tells you the cumulative distance which you cannot reset.
  • Speed-based target zones with visual and audible alarm- You can define your target zones for a training session based on speed. When you are out of the preset zones, the training computer will give a visual and audible alarm.
  • Speed/Pace (current, average and maximum)- Speed (km/h or mi/h) is measured with GPS, footpod, stride sensor or cycling speed sensor. Pace (expressed as min/km or min/mile) stands for the rate of speed. Pace is usually used in running. By setting a target pace, you can follow how fast you need to run in order to reach a certain distance in a predefined time.

RS300X 5 I've been training with HRMs since the mid 80s... this is the 3rd RS300X I've bought because it is that good... I don't need a lot of bells and whistles... so this unit does the trick... with the price falling and the improved watchband... this one will probably cost me 10-15 cents for each day I use it!!! great deal...

Rs300x 5 You really don't even need to consult the manual. This thing is about as intuitive as it gets. I don't understand these reviews that say its difficult to set up

Polar RS 300X 5 Awesome product and easy to use. I love that I can track swim, bike and run and there are preipherals that can be added later for GPS tracking and running pace. .

Very intuitive to use and the buttons are easy to figure. Uploading the data to the website is easy with the Flowlink, and the data that is track on the personal trainer web site is invaluable in heart rate training.

the auto settings for HR Zones work great and there is also the option to modify the zones based on Threshold testing done with my coach.

Thanks for such a great product that is very affordable.

RS300X 3 The product works fine. The instructions are pitiful. What came with the unit leaves out many features and makes no reference to the full manual available on line. Even the full manual is difficult to follow and confusing.

RS300X 5 Great product, fast shipping.
The menus are logical and there are hints to direct you to what to do next when you're scrolling through options. Also, it's so easy to do lap timing, check your pace each mile while continuing to monitor your heart rate, and it is great for interval training. It shows the lap time, cumulative time, and heart rate on a single screen.

Totally non intuitive! 1 I bought this for a HR monitor and to time my long distance walks. I have a very bad knee and while I can walk hilly golf courses, etc., I cannot run with a rimmed lateral meniscus and significant arthritis. My walks are timed and I monitor my heart rate. This replaces a much older Polaris model. It is totally non-intuitive and the directions are terrible at best. I wish I hadn't purchased it and would return it if I could.

RS300x 4 Great computer but horrendous owners manual. Best advice I got was to download owners manual for older RS200. This manual showed me how to customize display to show exactly what I wanted calories, sport zones, time of day, etc.. This manual also explained the difference between sport zones and manual heart rate zones, and how the different exercise settings use the latter.

Do you need a watch while working out? 1 What do we need while working out basically, a timer, heart beat, maybe calories tracking, and a WATCH to know "what time is it!" while exercising.... This expensive high end RS300 does not allow to see it - if you want to know "what time is it" while working out, you need to turn the exercise off losing track of current exercise metrics and then see the time of the day.
Horrible user experience!
My first Polar, about 10 years ago, had this feature - to know the time of the day, I just needed to put the monitor close to the strap. It was perfect... nowadays, I can configure a lot of screens - all duplicated information - just a different format but still cannot see the time in any of the screens

seems Polar lost her way on what is really needed for workout experience

Close - But no cigar 2 Polar is the pioneer company in heart rate measurement for athletics and I have owned several of their products.

My experience with the RS300X is mixed. Technically, the device is first rate. However, from a usability perspective it leaves a lot to be desired. To begin with, Polar could have left out the "RS300" splash screen on the watch face and made much better use of the LCD real estate to make the numbers more ledgible.

In anything but bright outdoor lighting the monitor is difficult to read. I use this monitor in the gym four times a week. At Spin sessions, it's impossible to read the dial; and the built-in light is so anemic as to be useless.

When working out in other parts of the gym, the shinny crystal face seems to catch every random glare from the flourescent lighting. Even in the best lighting conditions, you better have 20/20 vision to make out some of the type fonts.

A recent Consumer Reports article also found Polar's user guide to be lacking. They recommended a Timex.

So what's my final verdict I use the Polar because I trust the brand. However, I wish they would make it a little easier to love the product.

Polar RS300x 5 I just had bypass surgery and have to maintain a BPM range while exercising. Feels good to be exercising again. Anyway, I like the instant feedback you get from the monitor and the other statistics it keeps on your workout. Although my current workouts amount to walking on a treadmill I certainly want to get back to running when I am able and allowed to. I will certainly be using this monitor going forward. I liked this model as you have the running and/or gps accessory options available.

Works well 5 Well our personal trainer was really pushing us to get the RS400 instead of this one, but I have to say this is a good device. It is not overly complicated, which is a plus for my teen son that doesn't like things complicated. I like the fact that though it isn't overly complicated it is very rich in features. Seriously this thing does everything anyone other than an elite marathon runner or triathlete might need. If you are just looking for a device that does some nice things as far as recording workouts, without all the unnecessary complication this one should work fine. Don't let someone talk you into a device twice the cost if all you are doing is healthy exercise.

Polar rs300x for biking 5 This is my 7th or 8th hrm over the years. It is perhaps the best. I'd been using a Polar 150 but it went crazy on me. The instructions seemed lame at first, but after I began paying closer attention, I found it all there. I like this because the user can choose which readouts to display and you can actually make the upper readout very large. The watch remembers the last setting and the next time you use it, it opens with the last used setting, i.e. large lap time on the top line, or whatever. You can set two different hr zones and recapture time in and time above and below. You can also use the Sport Zones feature and do five zones, but this is a little more complicated, because it all has to be inputted by percentage of max heart rate. I haven't bothered to fool with this much. It gives average hr for the workout and lap averages, too. The best feature is that all the feedback data for the last 15 days stays in the watch. Each workout pushes one saved data field out of memory, but you always have two weeks of your last workouts recorded. I got it in orange because I'm tired of losing the black watch in my sports bags. The orange should stand out. The chest strap is a huge improvement over the older Polar models. You can change the battery yourself and the actual strap is replaceable for 7 bucks.

Fantastic 5 I had the older version of this and unfortuantely attempted to change the battery myself don't do - take it to an authorized maintence dealer, and thus had to purchase this one. It has the same great features actually more than the older model and works for all of my needs. Love to be able to see where I am in the zone.
