In the Box

Body measurement features:

  • Automatic age based target zone - bpm / %- To help you train safely and effectively, the training computer determines your heart rate target zone limits automatically according to your age-based maximum heart rate (220 minus age). The limits are determined either in beats per minute (bpm), as a percentage (%) of your maximum heart rate, or as a heart rate reserve (% HRR). See also Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and Manual target zone.
  • Average and maximum heart rate of training
  • Heart rate - bpm / % / graphical trend (in Strength Training Guidance feature)- Heart rate is the measurement of the work your heart does. Heart rate can be expressed as the number of beats per minute or as percentage of your maximum heart rate. Heart rate can also be expressed as a percentage of your heart rate reserve, meaning the difference between your resting heart rate and maximum heart rate (HRR = HRmax - HRrest). In Polar software or during strength training, heart rate can be displayed as a graphical trend.
  • HR based target zones with visual and audible alarm- You can define your target zones for a training session based on heart rate to help define the right intensity. When you are out of the preset zones, the training computer will give a visual and audible alarm.
  • HRmax (user set)
  • Manual target zone - bpm / %- This feature enables you to define the target zone as you want and is suitable for your training. You can set the target zone for your training as beats per minute (bpm), as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, or as a percentage of your heart rate reserve (HRR%).
  • Polar Fitness Test- Polar Fitness Test measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes. The result, Polar OwnIndex, evaluates your maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). With the Polar Fitness Test you can measure your aerobic fitness by yourself, automatically and without any exertion. All you need is your training computer. The Polar Fitness Test is as accurate in predicting the VO2max as any sub maximal fitness test. The test is based on heart rate and heart rate variability at rest and personal information.
  • Polar OwnCal - calorie expenditure with fat percentage- Polar OwnCal calculates the number of kilocalories expended during training. This feature allows you to follow the kilocalories expended during one training session and cumulative kilocalories expended during several training sessions. Some Polar products also estimate the fat-burning percentage (fat% on display), that is, kilocalories expended from fat during a workout which is expressed as a percentage of the total kilocalories burned.
  • Polar OwnCode (5kHz) - coded transmission- Coded heart rate transmission automatically locks in a code to transmit your heart rate to the training computer. The training computer picks up your heart rate from your transmitter only. Coding prevents interference from other training computers.
  • Polar OwnRelax - relaxation test- Polar OwnRelax test is a feature that tells quickly and easily how relaxed your body is. During a five-minute relaxation session, your heart rate and heart rate variability are measured. OwnRelax helps to track and improve overall well-being. Daily relaxation session can be done anywhere, anytime, lying down, or sitting comfortably with no talk or disturbing noises.
  • Polar OwnZone - personal heart rate zone- Polar OwnZone determines your personal heart rate limits for a training session. Depending on the day and time, your physical state may vary, for instance, if you are stressed or tired, or if you are not fully recovered from your latest training session, Polar can determine that information from your heart rate and guide you to your ideal training zone for that moment.
  • Polar STAR Training Program- The adaptive and personalized Polar STAR Training Program helps you reach your training targets. The training program gives you weekly targets, including intensity and duration, for your training. The Polar STAR Training Program is based on your fitness level, activity level, training goal and personal information (weight, height, age and sex).
  • Polar Strength Training Guidance- Polar Strength Training Guidance helps you to optimize your strength training by reading your heart rate and informing when your body is ready for the next set. It guides you how long to rest between each set in order to get the optimal impact. You can also download max. three strength training workouts to your training computer from polarpersonaltrainer.com.
  • Training load - available via polarpersonaltrainer.com- This feature is available in Polar software. When you transfer training results from your training computer to polarpersonaltrainer.com, you can follow your training load and recovery in the training diary. Continuous monitoring of training load and recovery will help you recognize personal limits, avoid over - or undertraining, and adjust training intensity and duration according to your daily and weekly targets

Polar FT80 Fitness Heart Rate Monitor Black with Black Display$319.95

Polar FT80 5 Have had my FT80 for over 2 years now and it has been thru the wars. It's even been thru the wash and kept working. Had to replace the monitor and transmitter batteries but that's it. I get a new transmitter strap every now and then, and try to keep everything clean.
The FT80, the Flow Link, the Polar software and the website all combined to help me drop a considerable amount of weight and achieve some pretty aggressive fitness goals. I'm considering buying a second to keep on hand so I can keep one at the gym and use one for rides and runs. Double thumbs up from me.

FT80 Hardware Is Junk 2 FT80 is junk. My FT80 has been repaired by Polar warranty at least three times. This is my fourth Polar HRM over at least 15 years. My old S720i is still cranking.

I got the FT80 with the G1 GPS sensor to track distance travelled. FT80's performance here is disappointing. It seems to be able to calculate my speed fine, but cannot accurately track cumulative distance .

After a work out, the FT80 reports my weekly totals as the totals for the most recent exercise, no matter which day of the week it is. The data reported on polarpersonatrainer.com is accurate, so it conclude the FT80 is confused.

Polar software for the FT80 is great. I used the Star program and thought it was pretty good. I love the training diary and reporting/trending functions on polarpersonatrainer.com. The downside is that polarpersonatrainer.com depends on data from the FT80.

I would buy another low end Polar HRM, but I would not get another higher end Polar product. Unfortunately, Polar got me hooked on good software. I am so furstrated that I am shopping for another HRM. I think I'll try another manufacturer for my next HRM.

Sorry, but au revoir Polar. I won't be fooled again.

FT80 5 Yet again, I can trust on HearftRateMonitorsUSA to offer a good price and to deliver on time.

My review is about the FT80:
I have only been using it for a week. At first I wasn't sure I had made a good choice by going for the black display but after using it for a week, it has grown on me. So far I am very happy with this model.

My only disappointment has been that the included H1 transmitter doesn't seem to work and I haven't had time to look for a battery... I don't care because I use my old Nike+/Wearlink transmitter.

ft80 1 The watch continually shuts down. I have owned it for 2wks. I contacted Polar customer service and they were good to work with. They walked me through a reset process. The process corrected the problem for 24hrs. My next step is to return the watch and hope that they can identify and resolve the problem. If resolution is successful I will change my rating. I like the style and concept of the watch. This is my 3rd polar watch and I have been very satisfied with my other purchases. i'll keep you posted.

Polar FT80 4 So far, so good - but only one month in. I'm wary of other Polar comments, though I've had good luck with my FT7 18 mos. and am hopeful about the FT80.

Excellent product from an excellent retailer 4 I am sadden by all the negative reviews on here as people seem to be complaining about how fragile the watch is. I for one find the warch to be excellent, the strap is fine unless you smash it on the ground and run a car over it. The watch does what I need, calculate my calories, keep me in the optimal workout phases and tells me when to rest. The software works excellent on my apple computer so maybe its just a windows thing I rated it four stars because it only allows three strength teaining progtams to be loaded at once, so I use the STAR program instead which is better and allows unlimited flexibility. This website has been excellent in their customer serivce and shipment speed, so ill be coming back here in the future as well! Excellent watch and an even better retailers

Total let down 1 First let me clarify, the company Heart Rate Monitors USA has been excelent. The shipping was prompt and price was always spot on.

This poor review is completly on the Polar FT80 and the Polar support behind it. Bottom line, my HRM was 8 months old and quit working. Sent it in and was told the strap was worn out and the watch didn't work because of damage. I never put this unit in conditions it shouldn't have done well in. I have had timex wrist watches that were worn all day for years in terrible conditions last just fine. If the strap was worn out and the watch damaged......well i guess the name Polar just doesn't mean what it once did :-

Works, but I have some points 4 i got the black face with lcd display. couple of notes.

-DONT BUY THIS PRODUCT IF YOU ARE FAR-SIGHTED OR OVER 50.

- My brother wanted it, but when he saw it, he hated it. the print is equivalent to 9pt Arial on a PC with black background and grey font color!! so it's tricky. Although i got the black one which is cooler, and tougher to read, the FONT is still small.

-the flow link can be frustrating and is not very reliable when it comes to transferring into to the PC. The USB just doesn't work that well.

- the black display works poorly is a poorly lit environment. even though it has a backlight. its not practical to push the light every time you want to peak at your Monitor. so if you're in the gym and the lighting is not bright, which is sometimes the case, it can be a little annoying

-you have to wet the strap under the faucet to have it work well. not a few drops as it show in the Polar Video.

- the monitor is super light of course, like any regular plastic watch.

-The rubber watch band SUCKS. it's hard plastic. which means at some point its going to snap. so if you are rough, or if you tighten it every time you put it on, expect to snap it in a few months.
other than that, I think the produce works as promised and everything is is pretty self explanatory

finally, i love that it gives me total calories lost on my first 3 weeks, I burned ~3000 calories which is consistent with how much I lost 1lb it might not be much to you, but I only have 12% body fat. I'm just trying to lose 2" from my waist and the 6pac will show.

So this is a good motivational tool that provides feedback to help me lost weight and not be disappointed and in wonder as to why I'm not losing weight. it shows precisely how many calories I'm losing so if you count calories, you will be really able to take advantage of this monitor.

Very Happy with FT80 3 My search for a heart rate monitor started out with a quest for a sleek way to transmit HR data to gym equipment and iPhone at the same time.

No go. As far as I can tell there isn't a solution that doesn't use an external adapter.

I'm sure Polar has conveniently overlooked this market on purpose as it would steal share from their antiquated watches. The software on a smart phone would be much more powerful than a watch. I think they tried with their Bluetooth transmitter, but that doesn't solve the gym compatibility issue.

Having said all that, here's my take:

Pros:
1. Good looking.
2. Functional
3. Flow link is nice. Works fine for me on a mac. It's become part of my morning routine to review my PPT data.
4. Love Polar Personal Trainer
5. Body tests are handy. OwnRelax - resting HR, and Vo2max
6. Black screen looks great and is NOT difficult to read as other say, at least for me.
7. Calorie tracking is awesome.
8. The soft strap is really nice. It never feels uncomfortable or out of place.

Cons:
1. The band is hard to get on and off. Maybe that will break in after awhile.
2. Star program only gives weekly goals. It would be nice if it split the weekly totals into days, so I knew how much to work out in each zone each day. PPT does this if you create the program there.
3. Data for time completed in each zone and the goals are on a different screen, making the mental calculations for breaking down the weekly workout to days more difficult.
4. It's a watch. I hardly know anyone that uses one anymore. Having said that, I've found myself wearing it outside the gym. Old tech just bothers me.

I haven't tried the strength training feature, but I feel warm and fuzzy inside, knowing its there.

Great overall product. I use it with every workout, but Polar needs to catch up to advancing technology.

Great at first... doesn't hold up 1 This watch was great for about 12 months... and nothing but problems since. Do yourself a favor and read the polar support pages before buying. Everyone has software problems after a year, and the flow link doesn't last either.

Great tool 5 This is a great virtual coach! To begin with you strap it on an take a 'fitness test' while fully rested. Then you initiate the 'STAR training programme' and select if you are looking to improve fitness or improve strength. Then it takes over from there, guide you through your sessions and keep track on everything. It sync's with the computer seamlessly and the diary functionality on your personal web page is also awesome.
I'm the kind of guy who needs this kind of motivation and feedback so it has worked perfect for me.
Due to the reviews I purchased the 'White screen' model and I have no problems reading the screen.

For those looking for a training partner, look no further!

Polar FT80 5 Great product. I like the upload feature which allows me to track my performance. It's the best monitor I've ever used. I should have got the "gray" background screen and not the "black". I find the "black" screen difficult to read. I do wear glasses normally but don't wear them while working out. My last monitor had a "gray" background screen and I could read it fine. I also think they could of done a better job with the chest strap.

Polar FT80 5 I'm a long-term user of the Polar XTrainer Plus, which I have used more more than 20 years. I bought the FT80 because I am no longer a biker and wanted a unit with similar recording features and more advanced download capability. I've used the FT80 for 2 weeks and am very happy with its performance and software.

FT80 White Face is Exceptional!! 5 The new White Face FT80 is Exceptional! It is highly legible in all lighting conditions. A vast improvement over the Black Face version.

I upgraded to the FT80 after using an FT60 for 15 months. The FT80 nicely provides HR Curves viewable on the PolarPersonalTrainer.com site, has an informative Relaxation Test "OwnRelax" Feature, a Stopwatch, and the Strength Training Features set. None of these features are available with the FT60. The FT80 also does away with the Weight Trend Diary and Weight Loss mode in the STAR Program.

The WearLink+ Transmitter and strap set are great, so long as you keep them clean. Treat the chest strap like any other sports base layer undergarment. It must be thoroughly cleansed in hot water and liquid laundry detergent. Simply rinsing the strap in water is not enough.

ft80 1 The new wearlink chest strap design is flawed. I have owned an older polar model and chest strap for 5+ years and never had an issue. The only difference the transmitter and strap design. The old wearlink transmitter was attached to the strap and non removable. This snap in design is garbage and doesn't work. Don't buy this unless you want to risk wasting your money.

FT80 White on Blk 5 I love this monitor. It replaced an ft40 which I gave my wife when she decided to excersice w/a monitor. The screen brightness issue is not present in decent light imho. I do 99% of my excersice on a treadmill in my bedroom, one light about 15' away, no issues.. I highly recomend this polar monitor. Hope to add food pot in not to distant future.

FT80 5 Just purchased in December 2010. Impressed by site information, price and free delivery. Arrived faster than expected. Product performs as expected and easy to understand instructions from Polar allowed me to use immediately. I've owned a Polar HR monitor for 8 years and it always performs. This model meets my needs for multi-zone training that my previous model didn't offer, along with the weight training mode. Very impressed with Heart Rate Monitor USA, and my Polar HRM.

update to Polar FT80 review. 4 I found a chart at my swimming pool that says your heart rate is lower in water, and that I should allow 17 beats per minute. A web site I found says 10-30 beats per minute.

I like a feature on the FT80 that will allow me to adjust my training zone limits accordingly. Still, I wish there were a way to have it set for two different standards - land exercise and water exercise, to make it easy to monitor between the two.

FT80 - needs improvement for Morbidly Obese and swimming 3 First:
The online and live response from BOTH
Polar and HRM were fantastic. Quick response to emails and phone requests.

As a morbidly obese, severely out of shape person who does most of his workouts in the pool, I called Polar for a recommendation. They recommended this unit.

It works as advertised. There is nothing wrong mechanically with it but:

1. I find the display hard to read. Tech support gave me instructions to increase the brightness, but the problem is the light letters on dark display.

2. In setting my weight, I found out it only goes up to 439 lbs. I weigh more. It seems odd that it would even have a limit. The online trainer program's limit is much higher. Enough not to be a problem.

3a. My research found that only Polar has heart rate monitors that could be used in the swimming pool. Most brands say water resistant, which in their case means sweat resistant.

3b. In the swimming pool, I barely get above zone 1. Working out like crazy. My heart rate is faster walking from the locker room to the pool and back than when I am working my hardest in the pool. I believe that working out in the weightless environment makes blood flow easier.

3c. In the swimming pool, it does not even register a heart rate half the time.

I have used the special cream, also, which helped, but for my purpose, it was a waste of money.

I do, however look forward to using it when I am at a lower weight and can used it on dry land exercise.

FT80 Rocks 5 Great looking Heart Rate Monitor. Compared to all other Polar's this is the best looking. Offers a black display with grey numbers coming through. Some compaints it is too light to read, I have no issues. Downloading to the Polar Personal Trainer Website is easy, and the data stored helps guide me along to a healthy lifestyle.

FT80 - Review 5 I have used many Polar's in the past, and this is by far the most beatiful monitor to date. The screen could be a little brighter, but I have no issues like other people reporting.
I really like how easy it is to navigate through the monitor and set up workout exerices.

The Data transfer via Flowlink is a blessing compared to the way you used to have to use a computer microphone my older RS400. My exercise routine consist of Cardio the Wearlink transmitter syncs up with the Gym Equipment and Weight Training.
Overall I would recommend this model for anyone who works out 4-5 times a week or more. It has enough features to keep you motivated.
