Q: What is the Pore Size of the Geigerrig Water Filter?
A: The Geigerrig filter does not have a pore size rating. The Geigerrig Water Filter is rated by what it is tested and certified to remove. The Geigerrig filter is tested and certified to remove the EPA requirement of >99.9% of Giardia and Cryptosporidium. These tests are conducted on each material lot of filter media prior to Quality Assurance acceptance and assembly. Each filter is lot stamped and all components are traceable to an acceptance test standard.
Q: Why isn’t the Geigerrig In-Line Water Filter pore size rated?
A: Pore size ratings are arbitrary and can be misleading. We prefer to rate a filter by what it actually removes, rather than an estimated size of a random hole. Since there are several different types of filter media in the market place and all of them are constructed differently, it is almost impossible to make a single statement to classify a filter. For example, some filters are made up of fibers and do not have holes at all. We believe that it is more important to know what is being stopped by the in-line water filter than the size of the hole that stopped it.
Q: Does the Geigerrig Water Filter remove bacteria and virus?
A: In order to make a valid bacteria and virus claim a filter must remove >99.9999% (commonly referred to as “6 logs”) of bacteria and >99.99% or 4 logs of virus. Many filter companies make misleading bacteria claims with lower removal ratings than required by the EPA. The Geigerrig filter reduces bacteria and virus, but it does not reduce them enough to make the EPA regulated claims. Therefore we do not make any bacteria or virus removal claims.
Q: How is the Geigerrig filter different from other filters?
A: The Geigerrig filter incorporates Aquamira® Filter Technology. This is why we can deliver an effective filter in such a small, lightweight package. The active component in Aquamira Filtration Technology is a proprietary blend of coconut shell carbon. The carbon is ground into a very fine powder with a tightly controlled particle size, blended with polymer, and Miraguard™ antimicrobial, then molded under controlled operating conditions to create a uniformed sized porous filter block. The pores of the filter are formed by the spaces between the carbon and polymer particles. Because carbon itself is also porous, the resultant filter delivers consistently high flow rates at low pressure drops, which means long life, and high flow rates.
Q: Why is carbon important?
A: Activated carbon is effective in removing contaminants in two ways: mechanical entrapment and adsorption. The porous nature of activated carbon sieves particles from the fluid stream by entrapping them as they come into contact with the surfaces of the carbon. Adsorption is a function of attraction that actually “pulls” contaminants out of the fluid based on charge differential and other chemical attractions. This is how carbon improves the taste and removes odors from the water.
Q: What is Miraguard?
A: Miraguard is a silver based antimicrobial that suppresses the growth of bacteria, algae, fungus, mold and mildew within the water filter media. Miraguard does not protect the user against food borne or disease causing bacteria, viruses, germs or other disease causing organism. The purpose of Miraguard is to keep your Geigerrig filter fresh every time you use it. Miraguard allows short term storage of the inline filter without the need to dry out the water filter's element.
Q: How do I know when the water filter is exhausted?
A: Over time carbon filters lose their ability to remove contaminants by adsorption and should be replaced after 90 days of continuous use. Otherwise, replace the filter when the flow rate drops too low to drink comfortably.
Q: What is unique about the UQC™ quick connect system?
A: The UQC (Universal Quick Connect) system is a patented design that allows connection to all popular quick connect systems as well as to other UQC connectors. This allows the user to convert from their existing quick connect system without having to replace any quick connects. It also means that the Geigerrig in-line water filter will always connect easily to the system you already have. The UQC is also designed to eliminate protruding surfaces that get caught on equipment and cause unwanted, accidental releases. The dual button feature also eliminates accidental releases caused by bumps to the button. Both buttons must be depressed at the same time to release the connection.
