Although the 405cx is as thick as the 305/310xt, it is noticeably smaller and lighter due to the rounder watch face compared to the box face of the 305/310xt. Getting into the features, the touch bezel is not as easy to use as an Ipod, but once you get the hang of it, watch buttons will become a thing of the past for you. The back light is much brighter light than most Heart Rate Monitors we have tested and presents a clarity compared to an LCD TV. Even with BOTH the backlight AND the GPS running for a couple of hours, battery capacity is still is still strong. It is estimated the battery life per charge runs about 8 hours in Run/GPS Mode and a few weeks just in watch mode. If the battery runs out, no issues, your data is not lost, once you sync up with the GPS, your history will sync back up us well.
Here are some pros and cons.
PROS
1. All inclusive GPS Watch Heart Rate, Pace, Speed/Distance, Elevation, Laps, Intervals.
2. GPS allows precise Speed & Distance and using this will allow you to set a pace alert to alarm you if you fall out of your pace zone.
3. Laps. You can set up Auto Laps to record various aspects of your run. (Heart Rate, Pace, Time) and recall the Lap details on Garmin Connect or the Watch History.
4. Adding on the Option Foot Pod accessory allows for Indoor Running.
Cons
1. Battery life need to recharge the battery after workouts. You do not want to get caught in the middle of an event with low battery.
2. GPS Outage, This can happen when trail running. Signals can drop out if you do not have a clear signal.
3. Watch Size, can anyone figure our how to make these smaller for petite wrists?
To sum it up, unlike Polar, Suunto or Timex, Garmin owns the GPS Market. If you need a basic GPS unit without all the bells and whistles, the Garmin Forerunner 110 will be the hot ticket this for 2010.
