The Forerunner 310xt is Garmins premium GPS watch. It is commonly called Garmins multisport watch which has made some people think it is not for runners but mainly for triathletes. The truth is that this watch is great for any outdoor activity from running, biking, swimming, surfing, skiing to kayaking. At first glance people may say that it looks big and bulky, but once someone tries it on they realize they dont notice the size.
So what are some of the benefits and features of this watch?
-20 hour battery life (the longest by double of any other Forerunner watch. Great for anyone doing an Ironman triathlon or ultra marathon) -Waterproof up to 50 meters (Swimmable) -Vibrate Alert: You never have to worry about not hearing your watch beep again with this feature. The Forerunner 310xt can beep and/or vibrate for all alerts and is the only Garmin watch with this feature. This feature has been a big hit with the Galloway customers (2 minutes run, 1 minute walk) -Alerts: You can setup alerts based on Time, Distance, Calories or Heart Rate -Workouts: You can setup Interval or Custom workouts based on Time, Distance, Heart Rate, Power or Calories. You no longer need to go to a track to do a workout. -Courses: You can save a course you previously ran and race against yourself or use it to navigate you through the course again. Courses can be transferred to other 310xt users by downloading from Garmin Connect. -Navigation: You can Save a Location (Where your car is parked, hotel or home), Go To a Location or go Back To Start. Back To Start is a great function for when you are running in a location you are not familiar with to help get you back to the start of the run. I have used this many times while on vacation. -Virtual Partner: This is great for helping you pace a training run, tempo run or race. All you do is set the pace you want to run and you will be told how far ahead or behind you are by time and distance in real time. You can even change the pace during the run.
-GPS Receiver: High-sensitivity GPS and HotFix satellite prediction means Forerunner 310xt acquires satellites quickly and tracks your movement even near tall buildings or under tree cover. -Multisport: Categorizes multisport activities in one workout and also can log transition time in the process, so you can analyze your performance from start to finish.
So far we have covered some of the features of the Forerunner 310xt. Now the question is why would you buy this watch over the other Garmin Forerunner models?
One of the more frequent questions I get on the Forerunner 310xt is why would a customer want to buy this unit over the older Forerunner 305. I have found that customers who are looking to purchase the Forerunner 305 do so for one of three reasons:
1.The Forerunner 305 is the only watch they know
2.They want the multisport functionality
3.They wanted a GPS watch for less than $250
If the reason is for multisport then the newer Forerunner 310xt is worth the extra money with the updated features:
-Double the battery life going from 10 to 20 hours (A must have for most ironman users)
-Waterproof (A must have for triathletes)
-Vibrate alert (Many Forerunner 305 users ask me how to turn the volume up on the beep. You cannot, but with the new Forerunner 310xt you can feel the vibration even if you cant hear the beep)
-Works with most ANT+ power meters whereas the older Forerunner 305 does not work with any.
-Wireless transfer of data
-Acquires satellites faster with HotFix so you can start your runs faster
-Smaller and fits better
-Brighter and clearer display
-Easier to use menus
-More data fields
-Button locking and better button layout which prevents accidentally turning off the timer
-More secure and quicker Quick Release kit available (For transition between your wrist and bike)
If the reason is based on cost, then I have found that most of the features that are being used by these customers can be accomplished by the new Forerunner 110 or FR60 bundle, which retail for $199.99. These customers are typically only looking for their distance and pace; which the Forerunner 110 and FR60 provide more simply.
Some additional information:
-You can buy the Forerunner 310xt with or without heart rate. If purchased with heart rate, you get the premium soft strap heart rate monitor. (Note: If a customer purchases a Forerunner 310xt without the heart rate strap, they can add it later. All heart rate straps are compatible if they have an older unit, excluding the Forerunner 301.)
-With the most current firmware version 2.9, the swim distance can now be tracked accurately.
-You can add the optional bike cadence sensor: Monitor your pedaling cadence as you ride with this self-calibrating, wireless speed/cadence sensor. It measures and reports your pedaling strokes per minute, providing feedback for optimal performance
